Historia
At a remote little inn not far from the Kansas homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the Bender family. These pioneers welcomed unwary visitors with jackrabbit stew and a sledgehammer to the skull. In time, their apple orchard gave up its secrets - a burial ground for their mutilated victims, each stripped of their possessions. The devilish enterprise on “Hell’s Half-Acre” would earn the Bloody Benders an undying place in the annals of American infamy. But it was the mysterious fate of eldest daughter, Kate, that would make them the stuff of mythic campfire prairie tales.

Historical true crime quicky
Revisado: 01-31-23
I enjoy these short listens from Schechter. They are well researched, nicely contextualized and get the story told in about an hour of well written prose. It's somehow reassuring to be reminded that people aren't any more horrible now than they have always been!

Samuel Jackson is really amazing
Revisado: 11-16-21
The story is fast moving, the writing pithy and fresh, and Sam Jackson's performance exceeded my expectations, which were sky high and the reason I bought the book. There is just nothing to compare with a seasoned professional like SJ

Not at all up to snuff
Revisado: 09-11-21
I have read a few of Cornwell's books and enjoyed them enough to try another, but this one is just bad. The plot wanders, it's all very improbable, while simultaneously being boring and predictable. I guess that's an achievement of sorts. Then it just ends in the middle of a scene as though the author was also tired of it and couldn't be bothered to wrap up the action. On top of that the narrator is terrible. I had to speed it up to tolerate it. She reads like every sentence is supposed to be some sarcastic burn. The whole thing is dumb and disappointing on every level, plot characters production. bleh.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

Every American should hear this book
Revisado: 08-03-21
McGhee presents a very concise, intelligent, and relatively comprehensive reading of the many strands of racial inequity and injustice that thread through this nation's history from its inception, and how those threads have created a poorer garment for us all. Added bonuses are the beauty of her writing and the sonority of her voice.
If you have time for only one book on the subject, or are looking for a place to start in understanding racial dynamics in the United States, this is a very good choice.

Revisado: 01-07-21
This moves extremely slowly, and is quite boring . There is waaay too much time spent with the the daughter of Holmes explaining pretty obvious things to the amazed Watsons, while she then puzzles mightly over other obvious things so as to draw out the plot. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get through it. If it had not been free I would definately have returned it by now because I really am not invested in the ending. The dialog is especially terrible. Reader has a pleasant voice though if you need something to help you sleep...zzzzz
