Indulgent writing
Revisado: 04-25-25
I read this based on a poll that said it was unforgettable. The plot took forever and the narration sounds like endless pleading for clarity of “what is happening to her.” It felt tedious.

Historia
How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Truth is stranger than fiction. Author did a fabulous job researching this eccentric family who should have been a well known name in history. Captivating - held my attention entirely.

Historia
The Unexpected Spy is the riveting story of Walder's tenure in the CIA and, later, the FBI. In high-security, steel-walled rooms in Virginia, Walder watched al-Qaeda members with drones as President Bush looked over her shoulder and CIA Director George Tenet brought her donuts. She tracked chemical terrorists and searched the world for Weapons of Mass Destruction. She created a chemical terror chart that someone in the White House altered to convey information she did not have or believe, leading to the Iraq invasion.

Riveting and real
Revisado: 03-05-25
Tracy’s story reveals so much about the reality of government work and counterterrorism. The bungling behind the scenes decisions that could more often than not have been avoided if there were more diligent, intelligent, less egocentric & glory seeking people like her recruited. The FBI sounds like they get the LCD- amazed that she was able to withstand it that long. Thank you for writing this and dispelling the belief that these organizations prefer a certain type. As a woman veteran officer, I echo Tracy’s revolution to inspire more women to seek service and blaze paths. Hers is a much needed voice in today’s world. I only wish she was in Colorado to teach my 3 daughters.

Far short of expectations.
Revisado: 10-20-23
This book could have been so much more. Instead, he just regurgitates facts about an athlete that overcame obstacles. Painful. Don’t pick up if you’re looking for insight into competitive athletes.

Nice to hear a woman’s perspective in the military. This was a quick listen but still hit some bigger issues about military life. Applause that it kept me interested.

Don’t waste your credit
Revisado: 06-08-23
I generally like these lightweight military type action books but the war crimes lawyer character was an old stereotype and completely ridiculous. Instead of figuring out a better story narrative, the author uses this unrealistic character to drive everything. It’s impossible to get lost in a story when the main character saves her life and she turns around and demands to risk their lives to save the men that tried to kill her. Unreal.

Historia
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

Heroic survivor that always spoke the truth
Revisado: 06-06-23
Wow. I’m sad that it has taken so long for Piechowski’s account to come to my attention. His heroism is unquestionable but it’s how the world receives him and his unpolished account and opinions that is most profound. Don’t listen to the naysayers- it’s a story of despair and rage at people who don’t like things perfectly neat and tidy. In other words, most human beings.

Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Slow to start, more depth near the end
Revisado: 04-25-23
I expected to be pulled right into the story but it was difficult to really like any of the characters for a long time. Felt the “outsider” character’s reaction was not genuine—no true anger at her spouse for allowing his family to call her names and not stand up for her when she’s pregnant!? Ugh, doormat. Expected more
