I basically consume every audio book that Black Library releases. Many of them are middling, some of them are really good and some of them are really bad. I, of course, had high expectations for this book considering he source material and I can say that I was only a little disappointed, but it had more to do with the story structure than anything else. The thing that really elevated this for me was Timothy Watson, a voice actor who seems relatively new to me unless I'm missing something. In a world with Jonathan Keeble and Toby Longworth, I was really impressed with this gentleman's ability to totally nail exactly what the Legion would sound like, plus additional range with the ancillary characters. Dude totally knocks it out of the park. Definitely a good book if you're a fan of the Death Korps, but Timothy Watson makes the book totally immersive with his voice acting.

I generally find Gav Thorpe's writing pretty entertaining if not particularly inspired. Even the most mediocre writing can be lifted up by a good performance, as far as these audiobooks go. John Banks, Toby Longworth, Jonathan Keeble - these guys can totally elevate decent writing by their excellent voice acting and range of voices that they employ. Unfortunately for this audiobook, Robin Bowerman's performance leaves much to be desired in terms of distinction between characters. Most of the audiobook was disjointed and confusing and I had a hard time figuring out what character I was meant to be hearing, and the only thing distinguishing one character from another was the nature of the dialogue. It's also clear that Robin doesn't do a whole lot of reading Warhammer material as his pronunciations and familiarity with some of the things native to 40k didn't seem very consistent. I don't normally say things like this, but I would probably give this one back if I could and just buy the novel, because I'll never give it a second listen. It's a real shame, because most of the recent Ultramarines books have been pretty good. I would recommend picking up the novel instead.

What an audio drama. This is one of the best I've heard since Perfection. If you like the lore of the Raven Guard then this is well worth the price of admission. Probably one of Jonathan Keeble's best performances alongside an excellent score.

I love this trilogy. Toby Longworth is spectacular, as usual, and it only gets better.

Great voice acting from Black Library. However, the story was remarkably boring. I wouldn't suggest listening unless you are a die hard fan of the Mortifactors.
