Historia
A mysterious terrorist organisation has carried out several attacks against the Federation and Klingon Empire. Tensions are running high in a region already crippled by conflict. The perpetrators are tracked to the Lembatta Cluster, a mysterious region of space whose inhabitants, the Renao, regard the Alpha Quadrant s powers as little more than conquering tyrants. The Federation are desperate to prevent more bloodshed, and have sent their most powerful warship, the USS Prometheus, into the Cluster to investigate the threat before all-consuming war breaks out.

Total disrespect of the Star Trek audience.
Revisado: 12-20-21
I never thought I would react so negatively to a performance of an audiobook. My first question is, How did they select this narrator? He obviously has never seen a single episode of any Star Trek TV show, movie, or audiobook. He mispronounces EVERYTHING! I have read reviews of other books, Star Trek or not, where they slam the narrator, and I generally felt that they were being unfair for slamming him or her for mispronouncing a word or two. But this performance is too much! My second question is, How did this get past the quality control people, directors, producers, etc. Did they just leave him in a room to read the script and then send it off for distribution without anyone ever listening to it? I feel totally disrespected, which surprises me. I grew up with Star Trek and have kept up with the culture. I am the audience they are counting on; people like me purchasing the new stuff to keep up with the Star Trek Universe. I feel totally disrespected and I will never purchase a Star Trek audiobook narrated by Alec Newman ever again. There are two more books in this series, and it seems like a waste to not be able to read them for fear of my negative reaction to them. Perhaps I should wait a few months and read the kindle version of this series. Needless to say, I will not be purchasing part two or three in this audiobook series. My advice to Audible is, re-record these books with another narrator!

Liberal talking points and preachy
Revisado: 09-26-21
The first "Power" book was tolerable, but this one turned intolerable in the first hour. I could listen no more. All the liberal talking points were covered. Abortion, Global warming, Religious fundamentalists, etc. It was like he was hired by the liberal media machine to cover all of their sacred cows. I feel lucky that I did not pay for the third and fourth ones, as his output in his later years can be spotty. I met him and had him sign a book for me more than 20 years ago. In those days he kept his politics to himself, or he was turned into a commie lib since then.

Reluctantly, Sherlock Holmes agrees to assist Inspector Lestrade who is being hounded by an obnoxious nobleman whose jewel-encrusted dagger has gone missing. Good story, had to get used to the performance
Revisado: 07-14-21
This is a very different audiobook performance. There were sound effects inserted at odd times, and, listening to this in my car during my commute, I thought for a while that there was something wrong with my car because there was a sound effect that sounded like my turn signal. It turned out that it was a clock ticking in the sitting room of 221b Baker Street. Also, there is an effect that sounds like Paul McCartney singing in the background, which I can't figure out at all. But knocks on the door, the clip-clop of a hansom cab, and such stuff were a nice touch. The voice actor spoke extremely slowly and sometimes over-enunciated his words. That was something that took some getting used to.

Revisado: 07-04-21
The 23rd-century Star Fleet personnel are still wringing their hands and wracked with guilt over slavery, Indians, and the Trump administration. I read to put aside the daily hate for America that permeates the culture and media of the day.

It was supposed to be an easy job: find the Dark Star Revolution Starships, destroy them, and go home. But a booby-trapped vessel decimates the Meridian Alliance fleet, leaving Serengeti - a Valkyrie class warship with a sentient AI brain - on her own, wrecked and abandoned in an empty expanse of space. On the edge of total failure, Serengeti thinks only of her crew. She herds the survivors into a lifeboat, intending to sling them into space. But the escape pod sticks in her belly, locking the cryogenically frozen crew inside.

Not the usual stuff
Revisado: 10-08-13
Most SF books I have read lately portray a world of the future where global warming has destroyed or decimated the world, religious zealots have taken over with disastrous results, or capitalism has run amok and impoverished 99% of the population. This book has visited the future without using the liberal agenda as a guide, and is a refreshing change from that template. It is not like you are listening to conservative talk radio. The author simply does not overtly push the liberal agenda. Refreshing!

In the wake of a humbling incident aboard a canal boat in the Cotswolds, young Captain Horatio Hornblower arrives in London to take command of the Atropos, a 22-gun sloop barely large enough to require a captain. Her first assignment under Hornblower's command is as flagship for the funeral procession of Lord Nelson.

The whole Hornblower series
Revisado: 02-24-13
This is my second time through the Hornblower series. The first time was when you had to rent cassettes, listen to them and return them by mail.
A lot of people complain about the narrator, but I have heard a lot worse. Some of the British accent narrators seem to be very condescending and the pronunciations of certain words are hard to take for a long book. (Like the narration in the some of the John LeCarre series of books,or most of the books by Winston Churchill.)
Partially throughout the first time through the series, I kept thinking that there was something very familiar about the Hornblower character. Then I heard that Gene Roddenberry, when he was creating the first Star Trek TV show, told his writers to think of Captain Kirk as a, "Space going Horatio Hornblower." He brings his ship and crew through seemingly impossible situations to the glory of his country and his King.
When I was through with the Hornblower series, I was hungry for more, so I tried, "Master and Commander" of the Aubrey Maturin series of books by Patrick O'Brian, and found it boring and unreadable.
