Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Historia
A literary icon sometimes seen as a bridge between the Beat Generation and the hippies, Ken Kesey scored an unexpected hit with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His successful follow-up, Sometimes a Great Notion, was also transformed into a major motion picture, directed by and starring Paul Newman. Here, Oregon’s Stamper family does what it can to survive a bitter strike dividing their tiny logging community. And as tensions rise, delicate family bonds begin to fray and unravel.

The 60's were different
Revisado: 01-18-25
I lived through the sixties as a high school student, so I'm aware of all the influences on writers and culture. Kesey certainly was influenced by something when writing much of this far too long novel. His creation of the lumberjack culture of the Pacific northwest is wonderful, but waxes on much too long. Less would have been better - the story doesn't support this long a book. The narration was excellent, the story was good, but it rambled too much for my tastes.

Troubled Times Revisited
Revisado: 06-29-24
Nixonland took me back in time to a very divided and troubled period for our country. Well, we're there again, aren't we. An excellent overview of both sides of the deep divide that is the dark soul of these not United States. May make your blood boil, but it's a very well presented retrospective.

Revisado: 02-16-24
Wonderful history of an uncommon common man who was honest and forthright- no longer found in our modern politicians. Maybe a bit too many details but then again that’s what made this lyrical portrait so real.

Wonderful stories ruined by readers
Revisado: 07-01-23
I love Russian literature and was looking forward to this far ranging collection. The tales lived up to my expectations and were varied, folksy, thought provoking and poignant. Some of the reading was quite good. Unfortunately, there were some readers who should never do this again - they mispronounced words, repeated phrases and generally mangled Chekhov, Gogol and other authors work - very disappointing.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Just not Mr. King's finest = some epic characters as always but a ridiculous premise (yes, I know it's speculative fiction) and an extremely unsatisfactory ending. Not worth my time
