POIGNANT, PAINFUL, POWERFUL !
Revisado: 02-13-20
This book is amazing. I only wish the author had finished the sequel. The narrator does justice to this work at every stage and in every situation, she was wonderful. The story is difficult and heart wrenching, but glimmers of hope shone through often enough to keep from tears. Seeing the world through the eyes of this young girl during the 1950s brought me back to years I lived through but places in this world I could not know. I heard about racism of that time, but never so deeply and so clearly or with such intimacy. Pairing that with the darkest moment in an abusive home was devastating. But every one of us needs to hear such stories in case we think we can overlook them. Tangy Mae is a powerful force. So smart, loving and hopeful in a life offering her little chance for any such things. And it is unforgivable that her mother, one person, can do damage to so many lives. This is a book not to miss.

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Robert Weekes is a practitioner of empirical philosophy - an arcane, female-dominated branch of science used to summon the wind, shape clouds of smoke, heal the injured, and even fly. Though he dreams of fighting in the Great War as the first male in the elite US Sigilry Corps Rescue and Evacuation Service - a team of flying medics - Robert is resigned to mixing batches of philosophical chemicals and keeping the books for the family business in rural Montana, where his mother, a former soldier and vigilante, aids the locals.

HOW FUN !
Revisado: 02-12-20
This is a wonderful, fun, creative escape from the dregs of daily life. The narrator did a great job, reading this fantasy depiction of history as though it is the truth, and how interesting if it had been ! I would love to enter this world for a little while and see where it leads. The coming of age message rings true for any world, growing up, no matter one's age, is full of challenges, ups and downs, wins, and many losses. Presenting a tale from a world where women ruled, but ruled in the traditional ways of men is both illuminating, and fun to watch. Ok guys, this is how it feels to us !!

WHAT A FUN AND FASCINATING RIDE !!!
Revisado: 02-12-20
I absolutely loved this book ! The narrator was perfect, bringing every aspect of this story to life even when he spoke in a near-monotone level. I did not want it to end, 15 hours of this journey was just not enough ! I was thrilled to see so many of the strongest characters were female, Thank you Brom ! And there were so many important messages and deep stories underlying the main theme. Wonderful !

Historia
She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

WayToo Wordy and Overwritten
Revisado: 02-12-20
I wanted to enjoy this book but after several chapters I liked it less then when I began. The story is way too wordy, forcing the listener to hear the same descriptions again and again as if we were incapable of grasping things the first time. The plot may have been worth the time but I could never find it hidden under all the pedantic words and repeated words. Just not for me

I LOVED IT !
Revisado: 02-12-20
This book is amazing! I could not turn it off and listened almost in one setting, taking it to the barn while I did chores, when I shopped at the grocery, even when I took a shower and prepared for bed. The narrating was superb and the twists and turns were perfection. I had no idea where this story would end and was left enthralled long after the last words were spoken. While painful and often dark, I loved this book and recommend it to anyone.

Historia
Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

TOUCHING AND CLEVER
Revisado: 02-12-20
I truly enjoyed this book. Well written and gripping. The narrator for the Alina is perfect, she brings the character to life and drew me in so I could not turn off the book. However, the narrator for Alice was too edgy and angry, This made it harder to feel empathy for or communion with Alice. While both stories were woven together beautifully, I found my self hoping "Alice" would hush so I could here "Alina's" voice again. While the narrator for Alice was distracting, the journey was worth the effort. I do recommend this story.

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Painful But Beautiful
Revisado: 01-12-20
The first chapter of this book almost scared me off. The cliche antics of college kids was not something I really wanted to waste time on. So I almost turned off the audio and returned the book. I am so glad I waited a little longer because what hid behind the first chapters was worth the trek. This book is an emotional roller coaster that spends most of its time heading downward at breakneck speed. No time to scream or take a deep breath. But the climbs back upward were enough to keep me in the proverbial cart. The narration was very well done. Although the narrator gave all the characters a too similar voice and pitch, the rest of the reading made up for this. However, the tunnels into which the author rushed me were so dark and dismal I thought I might fall out off the tracks and run for home. But I stayed until the end of the ride because the story itself is haunting and beautiful. The characters open up slowly and carefully as the story progresses and by the end they are nearly formed, but that is part of this book's strength, We know what we need to know, and no more. Well worth the time.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ !!!!!
Revisado: 01-12-20
The only word I can find that truly describes this book is AMAZING. From the superb narration to the heart wrenching story line to the beautifully crafted characters, this book has no flaws, Only perfection. I am a voracious book reader/listener, and I must admit also a book snob. If the words or clumsy, the story is trite or not engaging, or the characters are superficial, I am gone. Maybe too quickly. But never looking back. I could not tear myself away from this book. Full of pain, yet hope, loss, yet redemption, and even touches of joy I was mesmerize, shamed, lost in the story. The author finds magic amid pain and horror. And I found myself seeing the world tilt, really tilt to a new axis.
WE NEED THIS BOOK, NOW, and from now on, to teach in ways that may keep us from returning to where we have been.

Cliche
Revisado: 12-22-19
I really wanted to like this book because the narrating is excellent. The author does as good a job as any professional reader. But the story line is so cliche and predictable, I was bored from page 1. While Rae is facing a terrible crisis in her life, she is superficial and not very believable. I could not get past the first few chapters even though some of the reviews promise a intriguing twist at the end of the story.
