Least engaging so far
Revisado: 01-31-24
On the plus side things have kind of slowed down in terms of giving him every and any skill or stat he wanted and he's finally gaining a little character development. However I tuned out multiple times simply because nothing relevant seemed to be happening. Also at this point it feels like the characters outside trent's party are just being mentioned and abandoned, maybe the storylines will get looped back together but to introduce someone then never circle back is odd.

I can't do it anymore...nonstop stat updates
Revisado: 12-26-22
I really tried to get into this series despite various stumbling blocks, the story was nothing special, the MC has insane plot armor, the world bends over backwards for the MC, but it had some interesting ideas I wanted to see to developed. However, the choice to read ability descriptions time after time after time like we we're digesting an excel spreadsheet is so immersion breaking that I simply don't care anymore. A single person leveling is bad, waiting for the entire party to have their descriptions read after leveling is 10x worse, then for some frustrating reason the author chose to throw multiple upgrades in during what is supposed to be a challenging dungeon. 3 books in and I'm legit getting more frustrated instead of relaxing while I listen. Maybe this is a lot more enjoyable in written format given you can gloss over the updates, but if it's not critical information why flipping include it for the reader???

Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Surprisingly dull
Revisado: 11-11-22
Perhaps it's my fault for not completely reading the synopsis, I heard the idea of spell makers and breakers and was intrigued. Thing is, a lot of this felt more romance than fantasy. Technically the breaker power was used multiple times but by the end I still don't really have a feel for what they can and can't do, the main character can break anything apparently. As far as narration, the woman was great but the guy was horrid, like nails on a chalkboard every time he said his few lines. The woman could have voiced everything and nothing would have been lost

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

I keep asking myself, what is the point?
Revisado: 06-28-22
First off, the narrator did well, I'm not going to blame him for the clunky way conversations were written, especially that he said she said 4 way conversation. The story on the other hand.... I'm about 19 hours in, the main character just keeps getting stronger and stronger and for what? He's not progressing to go home, he's doesn't have a goal, he's just doing things. Nothing ever puts him in real danger of dying, he's an smug smart-ass who loves answering questions with questions like he knows everything to life, the two gods introduced so far like him, most men like him, the women find him clever and charming, and he overcomes every challenge/fight/learning opportunity with minimal effort (and no I don't count a brief "he trained for weeks in a simulation" line to be adequate). For some reason he's thrust into a magical world, disrespects everyone stronger, more powerful, or with different views than him and the world just laughs? It's just dumb

Invincible MC
Revisado: 04-13-22
Idk how else to describe the main character apart from plot armor. He should be dead 1000x but somehow his stubborn personality gets him through, it also somehow doesn't alienate his friends. Apart from him, it seems like a good story.

It's a good story
Revisado: 03-22-22
I enjoyed it, for the most part it was good start to finish minus the romance (maybe I'm dumb but none of that made sense) but as someone who typically likes to listen as I nod off to sleep, there's a LOT of yelling in this. I feel bad faulting the narrator for that bc honestly if the author said someone screamed then it's only right to scream...right? It happened so much that I'm honestly conflicted, I want to hear the next part of the story, it's the first fantasy book I've heard with this particular setting/dialect, but the sharp changes in volume really grated on me. Other than that it was a pretty straightforward story, no real twists if you've read a bunch of hero quest type stories, but still enjoyable if you ignore the choices spawned by romance.

Historia
It should have been a case like any other: a missing princess, a king willing to pay in gold for her return. But before he realizes it, private investigator Eddie LaCrosse, a slightly shopworn sword jockey with a talent for discretion and detection, is swept up in a web of mystery and deceit involving a brutally murdered royal heir, a queen accused of an unspeakable crime, and the tragic past he thought he'd left behind.

It's one giant side quest
Revisado: 03-03-22
I found myself asking a few times how all of this info tied back into the original mission and when it finally looped back together it was very underwhelming. Throughout the story it's like the author put just enough info about a character to catch your attention but before you can finish turning your head, poof, that interesting aspect is gone.

Wasn't that enjoyable for me
Revisado: 01-13-22
Honestly this was a bit of a struggle. It's a full performance rather than a single narrator, normally you'd think that would lend to the immersion but it was just so distracting. Prime examples were when one person would be talking and someone else would cut them off mid sentence, or when someone was 'talking in the background' they essentially cut their audio volume by half or more to simulate, or how the deeper voices were just harder to hear without turning up the volume only to be followed by someone of a much higher pitch. Other than that, I'm honestly confused. The seemingly main story ended around the mid-point of the book and everything that followed was a side story. I was expecting a revisit to earlier side story topics but poof, the book was over.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

A romance story for women with darker elements
Revisado: 01-02-22
So idk why this was recommended to me as a sci-fi fantasy novel but it's a women's romance novel with elements of fighting, assault and sex, and boy do they like sex. I'm not going to say the story is 'bad', but as someone who was expecting the focus to be elsewhere, it was too long and boring imo. I think what absolutely killed any hope for enjoyment was one point near the middle(?) where Claire basically gives up trying to return to the future and says she made all efforts to go back, but she really only made half hearted attempts with ZERO planning and little to no investigation into her time travel situation despite hearing a story about stone traveling women. I guess as a warning, someone gets non-sexually spanked, someone gets raped, and this book likes to go into detail. It's not pointless detail though, it's imagery and the goal ultimately is to further drive home the romance plot between the two main characters. Not a story I'll ever revisit

90% magic school, 10% plot advancement
Revisado: 12-20-21
The narrator was the only decent thing about this listen. I get that you need character development and world building to set up a fully fleshed out epic, but this book took it to dumb extremes. The main objective we've been presented with, finding his brother, turned into an afterthought for so long that I truly started to wonder if I missed something vital to the plot. Save yourself the money/time (24 hrs!) and read the cliff notes because I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say 70% of this is unneeded fluff. I'm wondering what I liked about the first book, but this was so bad that I refuse to go back to revisit it and waste even more of my time.
