Historia
With Burning Boy, celebrated novelist Paul Auster tells the extraordinary story of Stephen Crane, best known as the author of The Red Badge of Courage, who transformed American literature through an avalanche of original short stories, novellas, poems, journalism, and war reportage before his life was cut short by tuberculosis at age 28.

Absolutely fantastic.
Revisado: 12-18-22
Anyone interested in the art of biography and the art of literary criticism should read this book — even if you have read little or nothing by Stephen Crane. Not only does Auster tell Crane’s life story but he analyzes Crane’s writing — why it works when it does and why it doesn’t work when it doesn’t. Excerpts from Crane’s works are plentiful. In many ways Crane’s life was tragic — but Auster makes the case that what Crane left was a body of work that deserves to be in with the greatest works of American Literature. Auster is also an excellent narrator. You won’t be disappointed.

Historia
Using portraits of America’s flawed policy makers and accounts of the forces that drove them, The Best and the Brightest reckons magnificently with the most important abiding question of our country’s recent history: Why did America become mired in Vietnam, and why did we lose? As the definitive single-volume answer to that question, this enthralling book has never been superseded. It is an American classic.

Best Vietnam War Book
Revisado: 01-01-22
Maybe the best book about the Vietnam War. Halberstam was there. Enlightening but ultimately tragic. I’d like to ask have we learned from this book but I can’t. Great book. Don’t forget Graham Greene’s novel The Quiet American from 1955 either.

The Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was also about ideas, in the broadest sense - economic and political, artistic and personal. In The Free World, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar and critic Louis Menand tells the story of American culture in the pivotal years from the end of World War II to Vietnam and shows how changing economic, technological, and social forces put their mark on creations of the mind.

Excellent book!
Revisado: 05-09-21
Great book and history of the 1945 - 1965 era. Can't say enough about it. If you've never understood modern art this book will help too. Totally unexpected ending about the CIA (you gotta read it). Many prominent arts and social movements of the era are covered -- Menand distills it all through mini-biographies. One of the best things about the book is that for every arts and social movements' controversies Menand presents the other side of, and push back to, those controversies.

We Need More Like Smerconish
Revisado: 06-14-18
Really good listen. Michael is a pleasure no matter what the subject. Several columns were very touching -- like going to a viewing (wake) in South Philly or talking about his many mentors. We really need more people like Michael in politics and the media -- INDEPENDENT THINKERS! If you like his radio and/or CNN show you'll love this audiobook.

Historia
When Mark Twain was growing up, all he wanted to be was a steamboat man. And so Twain ran away in pursuit of his dream. Life on the mighty river for Twain consisted of paddleboats and history, poker games and gamblers, larger-than-life characters and outlandish festivals like Mardi Gras. Twain recorded it all with his keen eye for detail and biting wit.

Revisado: 06-01-18
I have to say this audio book was excellent. Funny in parts, serious in parts, kind of sad in parts, The "tall tales" and exaggerations were priceless. The long section on training to be a riverboat pilot is a real piece of Americana. (Several comments in other reviews were on the audio quality -- it was perfect. Not sure what the problem was.)

Absolutely delightful -- and wicked!
Revisado: 11-10-15
Would you listen to Gulliver's Travels: A Signature Performance by David Hyde Pierce again? Why?
This audio book is so good I'll listen to it many more times -- it requires too to get all the satire.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Gulliver's Travels: A Signature Performance by David Hyde Pierce?
Just to hear the pronunciation of Houyhnhnms and their words was very funny.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The voyage to the land of the Houyhnhnms -- where the Yahoos live -- was great. Of course this section is the most wicked satire on humans I have ever encountered in literature.
Any additional comments?
This is easily one of the greatest audio books EVER!!

Don't Overlook Late Bellow
Revisado: 05-13-15
What did you love best about The Dean's December?
Perfect combination of story and narrator.
What other book might you compare The Dean's December to and why?
The Dean's December is similar to Bellow's More Die of Heartbreak and Ravelstein -- late bellow seems overlooked compared to his "big" novels. If you like Richard Ford and Walker Percy, you'll like the Dean's December.
What about Sean Runnette’s performance did you like?
The narrator captured Bellow's meditative style; the book is read nice and slow and Mr Runnette has a rich deep voice. Bellow can pack more thoughts, ideas, and descriptions in one page than just about any writer. No wonder Bellow's new book is titled "There Is Simply Too Much To Think About."
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have loved too if I could!
Any additional comments?
Great listen; don't miss it.
