Historia
The Man Who Laughs (“L’Homme qui Rit”) was called by its author “A Romance of English History,” and was written during the period Hugo spent in exile in Guernsey. Like The Toilers of the Sea, its immediate predecessor, the main theme of the story is human heroism, confronted with the superhuman tyranny of blind chance. As a passionate cry on behalf of the tortured and deformed, and the despised and oppressed of the world, The Man Who Laughs is irresistible.

Great performance, dreadful book
Revisado: 06-16-23
The narrator, amazing! Congrats on this wonderful performance.
The story is good,
BUT..
Hugo, here, does what he’s always done to the extreme!
Between every event and the next, you’ll find a whole poem describing something incredibly simple.
Because the story is decent, I wanted to continue to the end, but countless times I would skip to the next chapter, or skip 10 minutes at a time because … someone is taking a stroll and the weather is nice… ok… I get it… then what happened?!!!…
Noooo he has to 5 pages about this and you have to hear it all!!
At one point, there was 14 minutes describing someone being surprised, at another, 22 minutes telling about someone taking few steps towards the other side of the [room] … come on!!!
Pros: i was somewhat amused to hear Hugo’s side of England’s history, and of Queen Anne in particular.
After reading Les Miserable I continue to be disappointed in every Hugo book
I don’t know if it is so, or it’s me setting my expectations so high.
I hope you enjoy it better than I

Historia
Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.

Typically underrated classical novel
The idea of a novel by Claudius in itself is genius enough!
Narrator did a wonderful job
Downside, towards the end, the events related to Caligula dragged too long.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 03-09-23
Unfortunately, i had to stop with 8 hours left.
I lost my patience with the long parts of the novice’s thoughts and self-expression about everything that happens!!
The first time I decided to fast forward, i knew I lost my interest, but I kept going. Until 8 hours were left, i just couldn’t continue.
The narrator is absolutely amazing, he, in fact, was the reason I started this audiobook.
One of the most talented narrators!!

Historia
Prince Lyov Nikolayevitch Myshkin is one of the great characters in Russian literature. Is he a saint or just naïve? Is he an idealist or, as many in General Epanchin's society feel, an "idiot"? Certainly his return to St. Petersburg after years in a Swiss clinic has a dramatic effect on the beautiful Aglaia, youngest of the Epanchin daughters, and on the charismatic but willful Nastasya Filippovna. As he paints a vivid picture of Russian society, Dostoyevsky shows how principles conflict with emotions - with tragic results.

Less than Crime and Punishment
Revisado: 01-25-23
I had high expectations of this one after having read as well as listened to Crime and Punishment, but had to skip chapters and chapters of nothingness.
Seriously, Epolitte lectures for well over a whole chapter!!! I was not going to listen to that!!!
Just try and be patient if you decide to go with this book, but i’d get it if it was available for free, I wouldn’t loose an Audible Credit on this one
Nonetheless, the writer remains in possession of my respect, and he is also remains next (again) on my list.
The narrator is one of my very favorite ones, just amazing performance!

Historia
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

Very decent book
Revisado: 12-08-22
This is a great work in all aspects.
I say -maybe- you skip a couple of minutes because sometimes author lingers on some points repeating the same thing.
Other than that, it’s clean, decent, enjoyable read with so many intriguing characters.
Towards the end, there were even some funny scenes I laughed so much i had to rewind just to laugh again.
What with every other novel I’ve put it down being sick of the vulgarity, the sexual content and the cheap pornographic scenes … you will find this amazingly mature and valuable.
I hesitated a lot before I decided to buy this, but I hope you give it a chance right away. The time spent listening to both book and narrator performance was time very wisely spent and both get a five stars rating very well deserved.
It’s sad that we probably don’t have writers like this today.
Enjoy

If you’re looking to top Mr. Slaughter…
Revisado: 07-26-22
Then you’re in for a disappointment. The Wolf’s Hour is very overrated. I kept telling myself “I’m sure it gets better..” just so I keep going. I had just finished Mr. Slaughter and expected a similar novelty, creativity, and quality. I was very disappointed.
I like McCammon’s books. The Queen of Bedlam is interesting, Mr. Slaughter is captivating.
This one however is, again, overrated.
The story is simply a number of small stories pieced together. There’s no core story, and that took away the attraction of the book.

The book was exhausting to finish
Revisado: 07-06-21
The story is only OK.
Not too hard to follow. I was fine with the time periods and POVs going back and forth.
However, the rampant, descriptive, repetitive description and metaphors on every other sentence is just too much.
The exaggerated effort in the poetic theme backfired spectacularly!
