Almost as good
Revisado: 04-30-25
Never quite matches the first in terms of atmosphere or creepy factor. Some really good ideas but overall it just feels a little slow and unsure.
The narration is still great

Six years after four family members died of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and 18-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Worth the hype
Revisado: 01-22-25
Yeah this is probably my favorite audiobook experience to date. The story is brilliantly crafted for anyone with any interest in science, space, or the future. The narration is almost perfect. There's like 3 really emotional moments where Ray clearly holds himself back just to keep from blowing out the audio and it's the only weak spot in an otherwise incredible performance. Might be my first Ray Porter but it definitely won't be the last.

Historia
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Historia
In his novels, best-selling author Cormac McCarthy creates a western landscape filled with characters that are both mythic and authentic. Cities of the Plain, the stunning conclusion of his award-winning Border trilogy, brings together John Grady Cole and Billy Parham—the two lifelong friends who began their adventures in All the Pretty Horses.

The Boarder Trilogy ends with a wet fart
Revisado: 05-29-24
Well I did it. I made it through the whole trilogy. What a waste of words.
If and only if you LOVED All the Pretty Horses should you listen to the rest of the books. It’s amazing how writing can be so sparse and still so overdone. Plot wise, this easily could have been a half hour sort story. Thematically, each successive book in this “trilogy” got more generally and directionless. This one is definitely the most dull and the most pointless. I don’t know why Cormac McCarthy has risen to his lofty throne of American Literary Savior, but it feels like a trick.

Historia
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

If you're a fan of this author and haven't checked out this one yet, it won't let you down. Uniquely voiced and clever as always. It sort of fizzles story wise but the journey is well worth it. The narration is solid.

Historia
In the late 1930s, 16-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat lightning - a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there".

Huh?
Revisado: 03-28-24
It feels like All the Pretty Horses was a success and he liked the idea of a thematic trilogy so he just tried to rewrite it. But there is less story (and ATPH was already plenty sparse in that department) and less of a “point” to be found. He uses a lot of pretty phrases and elegant words to say very little as far as I can tell. There are times when I found myself spacing out for what seemed like a good while and when it caught my attention again absolutely nothing had changed. Other times I would get lulled out of focus for just a second or two and come back to be totally lost as to where we were and what was happening.
The narration is fine and fits the setting and tone.

Unique and Bleak Coming of Age

It's a harsh truth delivered with only a half spoonful of sugar in the form of lyrical prose. The narration is excellent and if you give this story the patience and attention it deserves, it will pay you back.
