Story is character driven, and the characters are delightful. It has a bait and switch storytelling style. First, it seems like a romance, and then it becomes a mystery. The ending is surprising and deeply satisfying.

For an all-male (somewhat sexist) audience?

As a woman, I found this book full of sexist references. It may have been true to the main character’s attitudes, but all the comments about females’ appearances including calling some “gargoyles” was offensive enough to make me quit listening. The writing was good but the content offensive.

Exhaustingly convoluted

Unfortunately this narrator's tone irritated me. I suspect it was meant to be funny in its melodrama, but if so, it failed. The tales of unchecked corruption and self-interest held no redemption. I slogged through the whole thing based on the writer's reputation, and came away tired and disappointed. Points for unbelievably twisted narrative that I could not follow, if that's praiseworthy.

My favorite of all the Dick Francis novels

There is something about the spare writing, the psychology of the main character and the compassionate exploration of what might be considered British aristocratic dysfunction that grabs me every time. The reading performance is outstanding. I have listened to this multiple times and am fed and full of appreciation each time.
