The Journey Continues…
Revisado: 07-11-24
It is a very solid climax to the series and i am excited to see what comes next. I wholly enjoyed the climatic scenes and the interactions with the enigmatic characters such as the Lawyer, Captain of the Guard, and Empress. And wow! Wheatley sure does know how to write antagonist characters that get under your skin! I was a little disappointed with the love story. I can see why Amira loves Dain, he’s great! But other than bullying the demon in his head, I struggle to understand Dain’s romantic interest in Amira. The expansion of Thadred’s character was surprisingly enjoyable. I hadn’t cared much about it in the first 2 books but am interested in following his own storyline now. The flow in this one for me was a bit bumpy, which delayed my progression. But i think that’s a reflection more on my preferences than the actual work itself. The narration is spliced together at certain points and i heard a few repeats of sentences or words. But this didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Certainly going on to the next book and Wheatley has officially become one of my favorite and trusted authors.

Amira Brindonu has done the impossible—she broke her own curse and rescued the imperial archduke from Empress Vesha’s witchcraft. Saving the man she loves should have been a good thing, but by doing so, Amira has upset the delicate pact between the cythraul demons of the Dread Marches and the Erymayan Empire, with far-reaching consequences she and Daindreth can only begin to understand.

A natural sequal
Revisado: 06-18-24
I am really relishing Wheatley’s series thus far. I normally get winded with most series as it just seems to be one hardship after another. With Wheatley’s series, however, it is one big tale, each book accomplishing a necessary task for the overall goal. The storytelling is fluid and enjoyable to follow along. The world building is strong and really enhances both the narrative and storytelling. The cursewood was so vibrant and i ended up enjoying that location more than i expected. I wish we could see more palpable characterization and chemistry between the characters, but I’m optimistic for the future as this is only the second book. Wheatley is serviceable for the most part as the narrator. It doesn’t seem to be her strong point, but that isn’t regrettable. I’m really looking forward to the following books!

Women haven't been hired to work in my bar for a reason: they're too tempting and too distracting - too much of a liability. That's why I shocked myself by hiring Avery Cole. She's young, carefree, and happy - a beautiful distraction. When she's around, the devastation of my past gets buried under layers of lust and desire...hints of a life I once lived but have completely given up on. I've already had my love and now that's gone; there's no need to try again. Even if love is staring me right in the face with a pair of deep brown eyes and no expectations.

A change of pace romance
Revisado: 06-13-24
Compared to many of its peers, this book ended up being a breath of fresh air. It was not overly dramatic or heavily cliche; it was an “everyday” romance, which made the story even more endearing. All the characters, excluding 2 or 3, felt like real people with their own individual lives that you could get to know. The writing/storytelling was solid, though delved into over-explaining territory. The frequent lack of reliance on subtext or context was annoying to listen to, but not unbearable. Narration was great, though Avery’s overly sweet southern accent impression was a bit difficult to listen to at times—a bit too sweet. But that is just a personal preference. The spice was sporadic, and i didn’t feel there was a whole lot of chemistry between the love interests. But that may just be me too.
Overall, solid. The low-key plot was really nice.

I like the narration
Revisado: 06-10-24
The narration was the best part for me. Unfortunately, the story was just not my cup of tea. I love the tropes incorporated, but the whole thing felt underdeveloped and too unrealistic to me. There is hardly any “showing” and a whole lot of “telling”. Not to mention, it feels like the entire journey of the characters developing a relationship/attachment happens off page. Their fake-relationship is supposed to span a year. We the audience only end up seeing 5~7 days. Both Britta and Sumner feel like stereotypes instead of real people. The “too on the nose” or straight up weird dialogue doesn’t help. The spice doesn’t actually occur until the last 3-4 chapters. It’s a light listen and very surface storytelling. So perfect if you’re looking for those qualities in your next listen. I just wasn’t the target audience.

Got me out of my listening slump!
Revisado: 06-07-24
Been in a reading/listening slump for the last 3 months, but overcame that thanks to this book! It was really engaging and had me so enthralled that i finished in less than 3 days! The flow can be a bit confusing at times but it’s easy to move past as you progress into the next scene, leaving a comprehensive overall picture of whats going on. Daindreth is such a precious boy! The narration gave me pause initially (just something to adjust and get used to) and it’s what delayed me in listening to this sooner. But playing at 1.5 speed and the sheer magnetism of the story moved me past any initial “hang ups” i had. Highly recommend! I’m excited for the rest of the series, which i’ll be continuing right after this.

Mediocre
Revisado: 04-07-24
There are some really good points, such as Kingfisher’s descriptions and the climax. However, those points are overshadowed by the rest of the story and characters’ mediocrity. This book isn’t bad by any means, but it does nothing for me. I am left with no other feeling upon finishing other than “ok”. The lack of thought or feeling is really disappointing. That being said, I do plan to eventually listen to the sequel.
The narration is ok, but I can understand other people’s distaste and frustration. I’m not sure if i got used to it or softened by the midpoint, but the protagonist’s voice and way of speaking was initially very pretentious. Not sure if that was designed by the author or narrator, but it made the introduction rather unpleasant to listen to—for me at least.

A fairytale you’d tell before bed
Revisado: 04-05-24
It reminded me of a fairytale or a bedtime story. It’s charming in its own way, but completely fluff. If you prefer things with more substance or depth, you likely won’t get much out of it. It is fun learning more about the whimsical world of Oz, however.

Promotes reflection on one’s own life and choices or lack there of
Revisado: 04-05-24
Unsurprisingly, this story was exceptionally well written and delightfully narrated. That being said, I prefer Kawakami’s other stories and protagonists to this one simply for the fact that Fuyuko is a drifting character. Most things in this book happen to Fuyuko; she rarely chooses anything for herself that doesn’t coincide with the path of least resistance and discomfort. It can be rather boring to follow her inaction and wandering, but this is an important lesson and story nonetheless. How many of us are the same as her and live our lives by convenience?
I’m pretty sure the symbolism or meaning of the title went over my head though. Did not understand at all.

There are lots of experts out there who will tell you they have the magic recipe to raising perfect humans. Gwenna Laithland is not one of them. She’s one of us. Frustrated, overwhelmed, and exhausted. Her relatable representation of parenthood validates our experiences. In Momma Cusses, Gwenna uses her signature style of snark and sarcasm to explain her interpretation of responsive parenting vs. reactive parenting and outline the steps she takes to raise her kids. Whether you are a parent or someone who has had a parent, we all need to learn how to handle our emotional spirals responsively.

An amusing tool for re-parenting yourself
Revisado: 03-17-24
I could be here for hours writing the list of what I did like. It’s humorous, an easy listen, and super gentle and considerate in the delivery. Maybe above all else though, Gwenna is candid, generous, and kind. I am one of her YouTube fans, but I listened to this book in hopes of gaining resources to “re-parent” myself. As a child who grew up in a hostile home due to emotionally and somewhat mentally incapacitated parents, this book brought me a lot of emotional comfort and hope.

Fanny Price is a weak protagonist
Revisado: 07-07-23
I can see why Mansfield Park doesn’t receive the same praise and celebration as Pride and Prejudice or Emma. Fanny is unfortunately a very weak protagonist. She doesn’t stand out until all other Park residents and guests are out of view. The entire first half of the novel literally only references Fanny being the background character to everyone else’s story. I understand the creative decision, but i think it was taken a bit too far. I found it uninspiring to hear about all these other flawed characters for 4 hours with virtually single lines per chapter dedicated to the person who was supposed to be the protagonist. It was only the final half that i really enjoyed and got involved with. The ending is a wiki summarization to be honest. I wish we could’ve seen how things unfolded with a few scenes rather than just being told.
Susan is my favorite character. And the best plot point was the relationship between Lord Bertram and Fanny.
Oh. And the narration worked for me.
