Historia
Johannesburg, 1980s Apartheid South Africa. Augustine flees her vengeful ex-boyfriend with nothing but her child and the clothes on her back, terrified he will find her. Because she also possesses a dangerous secret. One he will kill for. One he will never stop hunting her for. But Augustine is rescued by a wealthy white housewife who takes pity on her, offering both employment and refuge. Or so she thinks. It might seem that she is safe inside the walls of the prosperous Diamond family home, but outside her every move is watched. Her sanctuary has become her prison.

The author got lost in his own story
Revisado: 05-03-25
This had great potential, but either the author got lost or got lazy. Maybe he wanted the book to wrap after a certain number of pages. I don’t know, but there were too many things left hanging.
This author has a gift for creating rich characters that you pay attention to because they couldn’t possibly be this interesting to on be left dangling. Wrong.
Spoilers maybe?
Why was there a serial killer? Was it Bessie? Martin? Why was Bessie rich beyond belief, but managing to weave a security blanket around Martin and his financial success? Why did he acknowledge her over reach and even say… can I at least keep my maid?, but then once the maid and her baby were moved to Bessie’s there was no further story line? And if Martin was the killer then how come Bessie didn’t know? Bessie got rid of the prying detective by shooting at him? If he was that easy, he would have quit searching for Augustine when he was attacked by the mob… he spent hours pondering why that had happened he was so scared. Oh, maybe it was because his dog took the shot. That’s was what tipped the scales… lol.
And why was Roslyn the chosen one? Brown Sugar was more interesting. We barely knew Roslyn because she was so “contained” “cold” because of her supportive parents and her goals? And why have supportive parents that don’t even know you want to be a lawyer/judge but that guard you against anything that could impact your time at university!?!! And Segert didn’t like anything about her! but of all the characters he interacted with, that he cared about, he saved her and her future.
Teddy and his job and the evidence? Did he keep grooming? Did he go to jail?
And back to Segert. Why did we find out about a daughter? How did that contribute to the story?
And Augustine’s fate?! Ambiguous. It may be me, but who and where are these people that want an ambiguous endings?? Can authors stop writing for them?

Historia
The tide is turning against the colonists in the Revolutionary War, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Morris cannot sit by idly. Quietly disdainful of her Tory parents, who drag her along to society events and welcome a British soldier into their home during their occupation of New York City, Elizabeth decides to take matters into her own hands. She realizes that, as a young woman, no one around her believes that she can comprehend the profound implications of being a nation at war - she is, effectively, invisible. And she can use this invisibility to her advantage.

I can only imagine how many people have taken the time to so eloquently string together words that might do this work justice, but I will not. I haven’t had a favorite book since childhood and now I do.

The wandering does not leave you wondering.
Revisado: 10-16-23
I love a book that pulls you in and leaves you wondering what will happen next, one that gets you fully invested in knowing more, but this wasn’t that book.
The characters wander which could have been intriguing, but if you couple that with the book’s wandering staccato chapter structure, the number of characters, the number of nicknames, the characters whose names change, the flashbacks, etc. There is enough detail for a book, but the formatting style makes it had to follow without visual queues.
I suspect this book was written knowing that the the goal was to make it a screenplay.
Book: Not recommended 😏
Screenplay: Yet to be scene 😉

This is the beginning of a book series
Revisado: 10-09-23
The story was intriguing and I was fully invested until late middle to the end. I wish I would have read somewhere that this was a book series. It would have better prepared me for the ending. With that being said, the ending was not good enough for me to want to listen to subsequent books. It wrapped up with a quick stamp of an ending and what was left for you to ponder could happen in the next book didn’t compel me to pick up the next book in the series.
