Historia
Brigit Strawbridge Howard was shocked the day she realized she knew more about the French Revolution than she did about her native trees. And birds. And wildflowers. And bees. The thought stopped her — quite literally — in her tracks. But that day was also the start of a journey, one filled with silver birches and hairy-footed flower bees, skylarks, and rosebay willow herb, and the joy that comes with deepening one’s relationship with place.

delightful tales that made me love bees
Revisado: 06-05-22
I've been a honey bee guardian for years, and found this book timely as I considered creating an apiary on my land after a wildfire. Howard has convinced me that any strategy must include the feeding and care of all the bees, not just the ones I bring to the property. especially the native bees. I'd never thought of them before. I'm grateful.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Historia
In this deep exploration of “occulture” - the liminal space where art and magic meet - Carl Abrahamsson reveals the integral role played by magic and occultism in the development of culture throughout history, as well as their relevance to the continuing survival of art and creativity. Blending magical history and esoteric philosophy with his more than 30 years’ experience in occult movements, Abrahamsson examines the phenomena and people who have been seminal in modern esoteric developments.

an interesting occult overview that I can't finish
Revisado: 06-05-22
the narrator for this book did a great job, and for the first half, I was hooked. they topic of the occult and culture is one I've long been fascinated with. I enjoyed the author's essays, especially the one that compared Crowley and Steiner. however, this is also when I began to feel uncomfortable, for even though abrahamsson did mention how Crowley's addiction was his undoing, he didn't demonstrate how addiction and occult practices are a recipe for dark magic. as the essays progressed to the church of Satan and the use of sex dolls for magical imagination, it became clear that he wouldn't label summer magic as dark. equating all magic as equal in it's impact to both practitioner and culture, without pointing out some forms, especially undisciplined firms, can lead to harm is to me, negligent. I stopped at 2/3 and moved on.

Historia
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

Another winner for Emily Henry
Revisado: 05-15-22
I just listened to this in a recent road trip and it made Wyoming and Nebraska and Iowa just slip away while lifting my spirits. there's much one can say, but this novel truly covers all aspects of being a book lover. from the joys of being a reader, to the world of fandom, to the view of an agent, to the mysterious life of the editor, I loved being inside the process of making a book. as a novelist myself, I truly enjoyed Henry's jabs at tropes and archetypes, as well as the pressures of having to live up to readers expectations when releasing a new title.
but book lovers is also about a pair of lovers and Nora and Charlie have a chemistry so good, I was sad when my nine hour drive was over and I had to wait till the next day to return to their story. as usual, the dialogue was great and the way the two dance with their words is just a thing of beauty. as I get older, it's this sort of book I want brightening up my day, and cross country road trips.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

I've long loved this series
Revisado: 05-29-21
I purchased this long ago for a road trip with my then middle-school aged sons. I re-listened in anticipation for the HBO series based on the book. The Subtle Knife is a fabulous middle story, introducing a key character to Lyra's adventure as well as building the world and the stakes for everyone involved. I wish the final book was as good as the first two.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.
