Clark Griswold was onto something...at least with his annual holiday meltdown. And since the last three weeks of my life have been riddled with humbug—another breakup, a broken toe, an office promotion I deserved and didn’t get—I’m not at all in the mood to celebrate nor have the happ, happ, happiest Christmas EVER.

Don’t waste your money
Revisado: 12-06-23
I agree with the folks who said this is a waste of money. It started good, and the family was fun and interesting. But the romance =yuk. This guy was a jerk, with Neanderthal mannerisms and a violent jealous streak. The language is far too filthy for a Christmas cozy. He refuses to respect her saying ‘no.’ He pushes into her private space so often, it’s maddening. I fast forwarded through the sex scenes, because he was such a jerk. He uses sex to deflect his feelings. He barges into her private family xmas without telling his friend (her brother) that he had dated her. He’s deceitful and sexually aggressive. I could go on and on. The only reason I listened this far is because i haven’t downloaded anything else for my commute. The only thing going for it is that the narrators are pretty good.

Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

I did not want this to end, ever. I adored the voices by the narrator, she was amazing. Great wit throughout, had me laughing even in the tense parts. So many twists and turns, and just the perfect ending. So glad there is a second book. I can’t wait to listen to more.

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Just loved this. Unique, entertaining, great humor and scary villain. Loved how the team worked together and loved each other despite their many quirks. Will definitely be listening to the next one.

In 1918, Philadelphia was a city teeming with promise. Even as its young men went off to fight in the Great War, there were opportunities for a fresh start on its cobblestone streets. Into this bustling town came Pauline Bright and her husband, filled with hope that they could now give their three daughters - Evelyn, Maggie, and Willa - a chance at a better life. But just months after they arrive, the Spanish flu reaches the shores of America.

Loved this book. I decided that I am just going to listen to to everything from this author. I don’t think she can write a bad story. This brought you right into the home of this family as they endured WWI (not a lot said) and the Flu Epidemic (the main part). It was fascinating to learn about the processes of embalming, and you cared about all the characters. I was rooting for everyone. Such love this family had for each other. I enjoyed every minute of the story. And of course, just amazing to draw the parallels with the COVID pandemic today. I highly recommend the narrator and author.

With the darkness on the horizon, I need to clear my name and get to work. Forming a Goodness Army is on the top of the list. Shockingly, my army consists of my wacky-tabacky-smoking aunt, my high school counselor who can shift into a house cat, the town gossip who turns invisible after downing five beers, and a few fabulous others with nefarious talents. And of course, a cast of fictional characters...who I created and definitely have an opinion on how I should proceed.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-04-21
Well, this book started out in book one to be so promising and funny, and went down hill, WAY downhill, from there. I don’t know where to start with my complaints, but the biggest one is probably the author’s fixation on poop. All the characters seem to find it hilarious to talk about bowel movements, and there is a whole laundry list of colloquiums for poop. Like a child wrote this book. And the extreme vulgar language - i don’t mind an f-bomb here and there, but this was full of it. I personally don’t think women in the south would talk like this, but maybe I’m wrong, I’m not from the south. Then, as others have said, the overuse of idioms instead of trying for original language or descriptions. They were used so much it was tiresome. The premise of the book, with the author’s characters coming to life, and the women having special powers, was darling, and had so much promise. But they ended up just being the most annoying characters. The narrator’s attempt to voice a child (Cheeto) was really awful. I was disappointed with the overall effect, and this is my last book in the series, although clearly with the cliff hanger there will be another.

Disheartening
Revisado: 10-04-21
Am I the only one who finds this story incredibly disheartening? I am about half way through, so maybe it gets better. All her relatives are super mean to her, fat shaming her, disparaging her for getting dumped by her boyfriend, and humiliating her for words she said almost two decades earlier. All the men make misogynistic comments, and are very aggressive. Her mom is so mean to her, event the narrators voice takes on a strident tone when she voices the mom. Although the story is interesting and very well written, i find myself feeling depressed listening to it, because everyone is so mean to her. Maybe it gets better…?

Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccionos can be. So Sophie knows it's not paranoia, or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave.

Drops the f bomb way to much. Sophia and deana are so cruel and condescending to their sweet friend. They bully and shame her. I found very little to like. I won’t be moving on to the next book.

Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she's a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn't help. Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie's ordinariness is an asset.

Meh
Revisado: 05-05-20
The good parts - it’s an interesting concept, a bit different than your average magic series. The protagonist does not have magical powers, but rather a sensory that makes her immune to magic. The premise allows for some interesting world building. However, the plot is so thin, and the the conflict so shallow and easily resolved, that’s it’s barely interesting enough to continue. The main problem i have with this story is that the protagonist is not likable, and a total diva. All her interactions with her friends circle around her and her needs; she cares nothing for them and their lives. At her first job, she makes a huge point in embarrassing her boss and making herself out to be the hero by quitting. In her second job, she starts day one assuming that everyone in her department is a lazy idiot, and that they hate her because she is smarter and takes more initiative. She undermines her boss, steps on the necks of her coworkers, condescends to everyone. She doesn’t even attempt to get to know them because, that’s not what she does. Then, we are supposed to assume she gets an immediate promotion because she is a brilliant marketer, even though she’s only a secretary with no marketing experience. The whole diva thing just doesn’t work for me; i am more with her co-workers, who want to strangle her. So, hard pass on this one, and I won’t continue the series.

An original, hilarious
Revisado: 12-01-19
If you love Saturday Night Live, you will love this. It’s so unique, hilarious, and shocking. The Queen is just wickedly hilarious. She is uncouth, thinks nothing of saying ‘off with their heads’ and has zero empathy for most people. How is that funny? I don’t know, it just is. I loved that this was all over the place, like Monty Python. Don’t go in with any expectations except to be entertained with LOTS of random silliness. All the voices are great. It’s a stand-up comedy in a book. I loved it as something different from the books I normally listen to, and would absolutely listen to something similar in the future. I’ll end by saying Kate McKinnon is the bomb, and she performs flawlessly in this episode.

Light and fluffy, enjoyable first book in series
Revisado: 12-01-19
I have read several books in this series, and will continue. This is a great book, and series, if you need a break from more serious reading. I continue to download the books in this series, and intersperse them with deeper, more developed books. I recommend this if you need some light listening in your day. The author presents humorous, flawed characters, each with their own charm and quirks. The protagonist does an ample job of finding her way through many challenges. I best love the friendships she develops with the women in her town. They are delightful, and provide support and encouragement. There is nothing especially unique or deeply felt in this book/series, yet is is pleasing and satisfying, like a good cup of tea on a gloomy afternoon. I recommend it for light listening.
