A story on many levels
Revisado: 10-07-18
Loved this book as an addition to the Lyra series. It is a great story, well read. As well it is a story of the trials of childhood and protecting the treasures of the soul. The story did not shy away from the very real childhood perils of adult perversions, of the relationship between innocence and courage, and the power of intuition and independent thought.
I do wish the recording was better quality. Mine skipped or faded in and out throughout the whole recording. I’ve never encountered this with an Audible recording before.

Historia
When the Iraq war began, conservationist Lawrence Anthony could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, caught in the crossfire at the heart of the city. Once Anthony entered Iraq, he discovered that hostilities and uncontrolled looting had devastated the zoo and its animals. Working with members of the zoo staff and a few compassionate U.S. soldiers, Anthony defended the zoo, bartered for food on war-torn streets, and scoured bombed palaces for desperately needed supplies.

Drawing a line in the sand
Revisado: 05-09-15
What does it take for each of us to draw a line in the sand? Anthony speaks to the challenge and to the dual nature of each of us as humans, and our relationship with others, animal and human.

Taking Responsibility
Revisado: 05-01-15
Very well written. Including the information on the plight of wolves, and misperceptions about them. This info was important to include in the story because it is the foundation upon which the controversies in the story (and all human & wolf encounters) take place.

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

My heart raced along with story
Revisado: 03-28-15
My heart alternately raced and slowed along with the story. I was there with her. Then sneaking off into the comforts of my life, quickly returning to hear more of the wild unraveling journey of boldness and naïveté. Delicious!

Historia
Minnie McClary is the new girl and knows that she doesn't quite fit in, especially not after she lost it one day in language arts. In art, Minnie has to paint a self-portrait - but how can she do this when she doesn't even know who she is anymore? Things aren't great at home, either. Her uncle Bill is building a huge replica of the Apache helicopter he flew in Iraq, and her father has blown some sort of whistle and has to start over in a new job. Then Miss Marks takes over Minnie's language class....

A "Young Adult" book all adults should read.
Revisado: 02-15-15
Valerie Hobbs writes beautifully about the importance and process of critical thinking, questioning, and speaking through the lens of a 6th grader named Minnie. In addition to gracefully questioning how we learn and enact "othering" through prejudice, hate, name calling and rejecting what is different from ourselves, Hobbs raises great questions about what good teaching is, what it might feel like for girls to step into their power, the lasting wounds of conflict both on the school grounds and in war. She shows the resilience for healing relationships (familial, friendship, enemies, and communal) that can come from unflinching and heartfelt communication And she does so with honesty and grace.
