This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Amazing Book UNFINISHED Series
Revisado: 02-27-20
I am super dissapointed that Audible keeps recommending this book as the series is unfinished, and it has been 10 years since the last installment. Why bother starting, not having an ending is a sure disappointment. Great series though, if he ever finishes it!

Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father.

Haunting, brilliant, amazing
Revisado: 06-24-18
I have been an Audible customer for almost 20 years and have over 500 books in my library. To tell you how strongly I feel about Yellow Crocus, this is only (I think) the third review I have ever written.
There are so many books in the genre that we have all read (The Help, Roots, etc.) and many are notable, why read another one, or for that matter, why write another one? I see why Laila Ibrahim had a hard time getting this published. But lucky for us the author had the courage to follow her muse and write this book, and found a publisher that had the insight to find this absolute gem and had the courage to publish it.
Ultimately it is the heart, and soul, and most of all the love that makes this book so exceptional. Honestly I nearly stopped listening after the first couple of chapters until the story and characters started to develop, and I am so glad I stuck with it!
Without question this was one of the best books I have read (audio'd?) in years, with haunting wonderful characters, helped by a wonderful reading, that will remain and be remembered in my soul. Unforgettable.
In a way the book succeeds so well because it does not try to do too much, story and plot are simple, allowing the main characters in the book to stand out. But ultimately the real accomplishment of this book is that undefinable essence that is so rare and authentic and impossible to fake, it is the authors deep and penetrating insight into the human condition, and her ability to capture that into portraits for us, her readers. It is the people, what they go through, and especially the abiding love that transcends that really touches our own heart and soul. I do weep once in a while in books or movies, but I am no gushing cryer, however, in this book... I was.
This book was a wonderful experience that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.

Just don't get it
Revisado: 08-28-16
I really tried to like this book, and there were some likable points, but basically, the plot is the star, very poor character development, and then, the plot is just not credible. By halfway through the book I was wondering what happened to some of the main characters that were introduced in the beginning in the book, I still didn't really have any handle or feeling for any of the other characters in the book, and the plot kept getting less and less credible. Finally... ugh, close to 10 hours invested and I just couldn't keep going...

Listen at 1.25 speed and its bearable
Revisado: 06-23-13
Horrible reading, but at 1.25x it is at least listenable... aside from his other deficiencies the long pauses really make the book unlistenable. At least at 1.25 the pauses sound normal. I don't get how the powers that be can who make these audiobooks take great material and botch it like this.... Anna Fields the original reader of the first books in the series was amazing, then flip flopping from one terrible reader to the next is really dissapointing. At least Suzanne Toren, the reader of 2 of the last 3 books is reasonable. JUST STICK WITH HER PLEASE!!!

C'mon people, get real, this is a great reading
Revisado: 03-19-12
What made the experience of listening to A Feast for Crows the most enjoyable?
No one can read this series like Roy Dotrice!!! When they replaced him with John Lee I was damned dissapointed, but equally delighted to see they recognized thier error and had Roy back! Do I mind if the character readings are not 100% identical to the first 3 books? I can't say I didn't notice it... but it didn't interfere with my total enjoyment of the material, and my admiration of the reading. Roy, thanks for coming back!
What about Roy Dotrice’s performance did you like?
Incomparable range of character portayal and vocal richness.
Any additional comments?
Good job bringing Roy back.

You are in for a treat!
Revisado: 01-30-08
Oh these books are so damn good! So funny that I find myself laughing out loud, and at times so touching that I have to listen to passages over a few times. Bujolds' character development is just fabulous, rich, realistic, and so alive you think you know them.
The other great thing about these books is the amazing plot development, I often scratch my head and wonder how Bujold comes up with this stuff, just great! You can tell the author really had fun writing these books!
The science fiction is fun, but not really the main feature of these books. They are just great stories, incredibly well thought out, and so well written!
You are in for a fun read for sure, and the great thing is, there are more of them!
Enjoy!

mediocre writing terrible reading
Revisado: 10-12-07
Definitely down hill from the first issues in the "new dune" saga, which were well written and a great listen. This is vapid stuff and the reading is really atrocious! Brick ruins the experience with a level of melodrama that just had me retching. I mean must every single sentance and paragraph have an 'end of the world' urgency? And they are all read with the same intonation.
I listened to the entire book anyhow, just to see if it got any better. This is a very lonnnnng book to listen through with not very much happening. Plot development: long, boring, and weak. Character development: I did not develop empathy with a single character.
Maybe Sandworms will make it worthwhile, but I don't think I can stomach the reading.

Great Stuff!
Revisado: 08-12-05
I really enjoyed this book, great SF, i.e. the science is credible, but eerily futuristic and captivating, really makes you wonder... The story line is great, Bova is just a great story teller; the story is an adventure with lots of action etc, but it is also about the inner life, struggles and journey of discovery of its main character. Finally, the character development is excellent, you really get to feel some of the struggles and emotions of the characters.
A great read that I would highly reccomend!

Well above average
Revisado: 04-01-04
Tired of the same old formula thrillers? This one is well above the pack with a really well constructed multi layered plot. Even the traditional "surprize ending" rocks! Being set in the world of high powered corporate espionage adds to the fun, and the psychological approach to characterization makes you think, and helps make this book a way above average read. Well worth the time!
