Historia
This is a gentle Christmas story, whose message is that if we didn't already have Christmas, we'd find a way to invent it. It's hard times in Old Trail Town as the Season of Giving approaches. The factory that employs most of the town is closed and not likely to re-open, and town merchants fear that people will try to shop on credit. Unwilling to carry the debt, the merchants work out a scheme to get everybody in town to agree not to have Christmas that year. What happens next proves that Christmas can't be banned from the hearts of those who truly believe in it.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 01-01-24
Yes, the audio is not top quality.
And skip the intro, unless you just arrived from Venus and have no idea what Christmas is or how it is celebrated.
It takes a bit of patience to settle into the time and place of the story, but once you are there, the characters take you along with them. The ending is not the smaltzy Christmasy ending you might expect, which makes it twice as satisfying. If you are looking for an unusual Christmas story, then I recommend this one.

You have heard, no doubt, the tale of Master Oliver Twist - that rags-to-riches boy; the parish orphan who became heir to the Brownlow fortune. But what few know is that there was a second Twist - a girl, brought into this world moments ahead of her brother. Great narration
Revisado: 06-16-23
I liked the premise of the book and it was well carried out by the author. However, the narrator put it over the top for me. I’d listen to Ms. Margolyes read the dictionary, for I feel she could make it come alive.

I love that this version of the book is read by the actor who play Herriot in the new television series. He proves his worth as a narrator, however, by doing outstanding voices for all the characters. Definitely getting the next book in the series!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Could use an edit
Revisado: 11-13-21
There is not much story here, but there is plenty of filler. If you want to know how a wizard gets his first computer installed, there is more than an entire chapter devoted to it. Is the author trying to show is the mundanity of a butler's life with the incessant attention to minor details? Mission accomplished. Meanwhile the promise of side stories trail off and go nowhere. Maybe they resurface in the next book? Wait, you mean there is more of this?
What kept me listening was the narrator. He brought life to every character, and made all those maddening details seem a little less maddening.
I recommend this book primarily for falling asleep to. Do not listen to in your car!

Narrator is extremely slow
Revisado: 09-16-21
The story is excellent. It is a classic in the world of children’s literature. Unfortunately, the story is spoiled by narration with far too many pauses.
The reader leaves an inordinate amount of time between each sentence. Between sections, the pauses were so long I thought my device had shut down. The only way I could get through it was by playing it at high speed.

I am totally enthralled with the Nevermoor world and Morrigan Crow. This first book in the series has a similar story arc as the first Harry Potter book, but explodes with richer details in a world far removed from our own.
Highly recommend.

Historia
Actor William Hurt reads this story of a small Japanese boy whose only interest is drawing pictures of cats, even while everyone else in the village is struggling to defeat a mysterious demon that plagues the countryside. Although first seen as entirely useless, it is the boy's peculiar talent that ultimately restores prosperity to the land. This haunting and enchanting folktale about finding your place in the world resonates with deep respect for and appreciation of the Japanese culture.

Haunting

I first checked this story out of the library in Houston on CD back in the 1990s. It has haunted me ever since. Such an unusual and mysterious tale, and the narration is perfect. Well worth the price.

Here is the complete and unabridged tale of Ichabod Crane and his ill-fated visit to Sleepy Hollow. Half of the charm of the tale is Irving's beautiful prose, as he describes the glorious New England countryside. But of course there are chills galore when the Headless Horseman appears.

Historia
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 08-09-18
As a fan of Narnia and Dorothy and Alice, I expected this book to be a little lighter. It was very dark, including murders. It was certainly different! As others have said, the narrator was a bit stiff without much inflection, but it is in keeping with the voice of the girl who tells the story. #DarkFantasy #Dark #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
