Fabulous Mystery Series
Revisado: 01-15-25
This installment of the detective Lavender series makes of Lavendar a particularly Holmes-esque figure amidst a particularly Christie-esque story. I loved it. And the writing was more straightforward with less superfluous descriptives than some of the prior installments. I’m off to begin the next one straightaway!

Magnificent
Revisado: 10-09-23
It is rare to find an audiobook that delivers both in the content of the story and in the telling of it by the narrator. (Sadly, many a wonderful book has been ruined by a terrible narrator. This is the double difficulty in finding good audiobooks!) Well, this book is both a perfectly woven and intriguing story from first to last AND it is masterfully narrated by one of the world’s greatest actors today, Sir Ian McKellan. What a delicious treat! I listened to it twice in a row! AND it is one of those stories with which you can do that, because each listen reveals something new that you hadn’t quite caught before. I give this audiobook my 200% recommendation!

From Rose Tremain comes the Booker Prize short-listed novel that “restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honor” ( New York Times). Robert Merivel, son of a glove maker and an aspiring physician, finds his fortunes transformed when he is given a position at the court of King Charles II. Merivel slips easily into a life of luxury and idleness, enthusiastically enjoying the women and wine of the vibrant Restoration age. But when he’s called on to serve the king in an unusual role, he transgresses the one law he is forbidden to break and is brutally cast out from his newfound paradise.

Sir Derek Jacobi reads a collection of tales from the master of ghost stories, M. R. James, whose stories have for many years inspired the BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas TV adaptations. M. R. Very enjoyable, full of atmosphere
Revisado: 04-01-21
Derek Jacobi is the perfect narrator for these stories, imbuing them with the gothic spookiness we all love so much. I find some of the stories just too open ended, without enough content to tie together any real sense of what the heck happened; nonetheless they are extremely gratifying, particularly when listening as opposed to reading, giving the sense that you are actually present at one of James’ famous fireside holiday ghost story readings for a select small group of his students. Transported to another world and another time; that is what these stories and Jacobi’s excellent performance does for the listener. I love them
