This book should be listed as creepy horror
Revisado: 05-28-22
The book is similar to some of the Stephen King creepy horror stories. If you like those you will like this book. I do not and didn’t enjoy the book at all.

Historia
Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.
With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

Tedious and boring
Revisado: 05-13-21
This book spent enormous time on insignificant unimportant details and was difficult to continue listening to. The main character has questionable morals and is not likeable. It was hard to like much about this book. The one positive is that it gives a view of what life in India may be like. If it is accurate I feel sorry for those living there and would not want to live or visit there myself.

Don’t believe the book cover
Revisado: 05-10-21
I would have given this book 5 stars but can’t because of the false book cover. Beware - there are no cat participants in this story. Good story but I was expecting some cats to be involved in the mystery detection. Not so. No cats! Booo!

Disappointing
Revisado: 04-13-21
I am a long term fan of Lisa Jewell and bought this book despite the poor reviews. I should have listened. The book drags and never creates good feelings about the protagonist, Melody. It is hard to follow because it so boring I had a hard time staying focused. Sorry Lisa, this one is a bust fir me.

Not as good as I wished
Revisado: 03-05-21
The story took a long time to develop, perhaps halfway thru the book and the role of the cats in the story was really limited. The story finally got interesting and held my interest but it was difficult getting to that point.

Cat and owner go on a journey that reviews the lives of each. Both give their perspective of events. Lots of heartwarming and funny moments and the cat is especially great. So glad I took the chance on this book.

Too much explicit sex
Revisado: 09-08-19
The story and narrator are good but there is a lot of explicit sexy description that detracts from the story and seems to be included purely to appeal to that particular audience. Disappointing because the overall story would be really good without so much sex description.

Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die.

More like a historical report than fiction
Revisado: 03-12-19
Fashioned as a journalist’s report of an exploration looking for the lost city. Very dry. Not what I expected. A lot of detail beyond what needed to tell the story. Can’t recommend this book even though I usually live Douglas Preston.
