Historia
Doaa Al Zamel was once an average Syrian girl growing up in a crowded house in a bustling city near the Jordanian border. But in 2011 her life was upended. Inspired by the events of the Arab Spring, Syrians began to stand up against their own oppressive regime. When the army was sent to take control of Doaa's hometown, strict curfews, power outages, water shortages, air raids, and violence disrupted everyday life.

Incredible Story
Revisado: 03-17-20
I was in Italy the summer before this event happened. I remember hearing about the scores of refugees who drowned at sea seeking peace in Europe’s embrace. This story is reply moving, painful, and important to hear. I hope as our global community continues to react to our refugee populations that we will find ways to come together and support those who need it most. Thanks for sharing this story and helping me see things from another’s perspective.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Inspiring and Thought Provoking
Revisado: 12-19-18
Being raised in a strong patriarchal LDS home, being homeschooled, and an LDS female—this book hit home for me in many ways. Many of her internal struggles about being a self educated woman have also been mine. And like her, I have made choices to become educated that disappoint my family; although, my family is not overtly against me like Tara’s was. Her story has inspired me to keep going in my educational journey, to believe in myself, and ultimately challenge the structures around me that hold women in place. I know it’s a good book if I leave feeling inspired and motivated to make change. I would recommend this book!

Inspiring and Enlightening
Revisado: 11-09-18
Growing up in a white upper-middle-class suburban family, sheltered me from the struggle and lifestyles of others in different socioeconomic/cultural backgrounds from myself. Now in my late 20’s I have found myself seeking out literature that can help me more fully develop an understanding of the range of life experiences people in my country go through. This book helped me to more fully understand the lives of my fellow Mexican Americans and how much they sacrifice to have the things so many of us take for granted. I appreciate the author being vulnerable and sharing his experiences and perspectives because it has helped me to have a more well rounded world view. I would recommend this book to anyone! It was a great listen :)

Eye Opening & Moving
Revisado: 10-23-18
I am so grateful to the author of this book for sharing her experiences so the rest of the world can have a glimpse into the life of refugee’s from one of the most secretive nations on Earth. It was so moving! And proves even more that in a global world we all need to be looking out for each other.

Historia
From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women. Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
