Excellent story
Revisado: 07-31-20
Alan Furst tells a great story at a difficult time in western history. He glosses over details but the narrative describes the times very well. I love listening to his stories and would like to know how he got interested in the period. All I can say is thank you!

Great insight into dedicated military personnel
Revisado: 12-28-19
I learned a great deal of what sort of meticulous training and planning go into our most expert military personnel. General McRaven provides details of a very rigorous training and planning for missions. It makes me very proud of the dedication of these personnel and of our military. Thank you general.

basic principles of accumulation of wealth
Revisado: 12-28-19
This book relates the principles of wealth creation in an enjoyable, anecdotal form using examples from antiquity. I think it is a great introduction to wealth accumulation. I have bought copies for my grown children. Hopefully they will learn the lessons from the book.

Historia
Bayes' rule appears to be a straightforward, one-line theorem: by updating our initial beliefs with objective new information, we get a new and improved belief. To its adherents, it is an elegant statement about learning from experience. To its opponents, it is subjectivity run amok. Sharon Bertsch McGrayne here explores this controversial theorem and the human obsessions surrounding it.

This is a moving, tragic story of Raol Wallenberg's efforts to rescue Jews of Hungary using his diplomat's status and strategy. It exposes the cruelty of the Nazi's the Hungarian Nazi party and the role of Eichman in the deportation. Such cruelty is hard to imagine, Also hard to imagine is the courage of Wallenberg. The tragic end of Wallenberg and the impact on his family, make this book an important addition to the history of WW2

Historia
In September 1838, a young Englishman named Charles Darwin hit upon the idea that "natural selection" among competing individuals would lead to wondrous adaptations and species diversity. Twenty-one years passed between that epiphany and publication of On the Origin of Species. The human drama and scientific controversy of that time constitute a fascinating, tangled tale that illuminates this cautious naturalist who sparked an intellectual revolution.

A great portrayal of a wonderful scientist who, using simple experiments and observations and using objective reasoning came to astonishing conclusions that although controversial have stood the test of time.
One of the great thinkers and observers of the 19th century that changed how we see the world.
I learned a lot.

well researched adventure story
Revisado: 06-22-09
I admit I did not know of Fawcett prior to reading this book. I found the historical background well researched, and was amazed at the hardships Fawcett and his companions had to endure. It was amazing that they did not die much before their final trip. It was unfortunate that two young men died with him on his final trip.
I liked the follow up when the author discovers what the civilization they were looking for was all about.

Historia
Little Brian Wilcox's murder is the hottest story in Scotland. Every major newspaper crowds its pages with stories examining the crime from every angle. If only Paddy Meehan could get a scoop on the case. A nationally syndicated story would surely launch her fledgling journalism career out of the free local rag she's been working at.

A good book, not as good as Slip of the Knife
Revisado: 03-25-09
This story describes the background of how Patty Meehan gets into the newspaper business.
Mostly enjoyable, but the part where she is beat up by the villain and just bounces back stretches credulity.
I enjoy the setting of her books in working class Glasgow.
