The book contains a wealth of historical information, and is well written. Like any book of its kind, it needs to read more than once. I plan on getting either printed or a digital version so I can fully absorb and highlight it, and make notes, as is my habit when reading a text, which is as thought provoking as this. But first I want to read more of this author. I believe her books should be read by anyone who is searching for the meaning of religion in today's turbulent times, where religion is once again used as a basis to condemn people for their proclaimed beliefs, behaviors and traditions.

Would you listen to The Nature of the Beast again? Why?

I might READ it again, but I definitely would not listen to it again. The story is very much up to Louise Penney's Standards. She always includes some well researched facts, which inspire me to learn more about them. Her characters become more developed and even Ruth had some likable aspects this time. There are definitely more stories about that character to be learned. But I would NOT listen to another book read by Bathurst. Not even a Louise Penney. (see why below)

Who was your favorite character and why?

Besides Gamache? Hard to say. Ruth, because she is an enigma, putting on this hard facade, while clearly having a softer side. There must be a lot of story there, which LP hopefully will tell about one day. Basically, though, there are no characters to dislike, now that the Surreté is "cleaned up". Or is it?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Bathurst has a staccato-like style of reading which I find very irritating. The narration fails to flow, pauses after every phrase and all the wrong places make it hard to listen to. I was surprised to find out that Bathurst has narrated other books. He sounded like this was new to him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I rarely like to watch films of books I've read. They invariably distort or diminish the story.

This book adds a whole new dimension to the Series. Although I've read it twice, it inspired me to go back and read it again with a new perspective.

I usually do not spend a lot of time thinking about politics (too upsetting) and don't really know what made buy this book. I think I heard some friends making some positive remarks about Elizabeth Warren, which included something about her being a great candidate for president, so I wanted to inform myself in case that were to become a possibility.
At first I was having some trouble with the author reading the book herself. I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks and only twice did I enjoy the authors reading their own books.
Once I got used to her very casual personal style, though, I actually found it made a lot of sense, since it is a very personal story, and it felt like she was sitting in my living room, talking to me,
The story she told was fascinating, and impressive, albeit shocking, Fascinating because of the way it was told (she is a good writer, telling it so anyone can understand her message, without feeling talked down to), impressive because she has done an enormous amount of research and appears to be passionate about her work, while also knowing how to delegate tasks, as well as being a team player, and never losing sight of her goal once it's set; and shocking because of the blatant corruption in our government, which is going unchecked. I do read Chris Hedges, who has written about the same kinds of things. She is not making this up.
I look forward to reading more of her books to become a more informed citizen. I hope she runs for president. She's what this country needs to turn some things around.

Very Disappointing

I rarely write a review of a book, and then only because I find it outstanding. This one is outstandingly poorly narrated. I have to agree with those who said they had to give up on it because of the monotonous drone of the reader, and the poor sound quality. I was very much looking forward to the story, because I love Wilkie Collins, and had just finished 'Moonstone' and 'The Woman in White', both very enjoyable reads. This is a singularly poor narrator and I will be sure never to get a book read by Flo Gibson. After listening to one chapter, I had no idea who was who or what was going on, because the narrator reads without commas or periods on and on and on and on and on-------
