Rather good story for its time. Campbells obvious enthusiasm for pseudoscience is contagious even if he sometimes overdoes it.

Historia
While hot on the heels of serial coupon-racketeer Gordon Ginner, Chief Inspector MacDonald of Scotland Yard receives word of an intriguing incident up in Lancashire – the summer cottage of local farmer Giles Hoggett has been broken into, with an assortment of seemingly random items missing which include a complete reel of salmon line, a large sack, and two iron dogs from his fireplace. What first appears as a simple break-in quickly spirals into a mystery of contested land grabs for fishing between farmers, made all the more enticing to MacDonald when a body is then found in the river.

Good background and characters.

Very nice. Well read. But I liked the next book in the MacDonald series even better. This one was bogged down a bit with all the discourses by diverse people who helped MacDonald to solve the case.

Historia
It all began with sheep-stealing. A hateful act among the shepherds of the fells, and yet not a matter of life and death. Then came arson and with the leaping of the flames, death and disorder reached the peaceful moors. Holidaying with his friends the Hoggetts in High Gimmerdale while on a trip to find some farmland for his retirement, Robert Macdonald agrees to help in investigating the identity of the sheep-stealers, before being dragged into a case requiring his full experience as Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard.

Fine story well told!
Revisado: 03-10-24
One of Loracs best in my opinion. The country settings and the characters are convincing and interesting. The plot is fine. It is well read, with the unimportant exception of the clergymans rediculously exaggerated nasal soprano voice.

Historia
At a costume party with the dubious theme of 'famous murderers and their victims', the know-it-all amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham is settled in for an evening of beer, small talk and analysing his companions. One guest in particular has caught his attention for her theatrics, and his theory that she might have several enemies among the partygoers proves true when she is found hanging from the 'decorative' gallows on the roof terrace. Noticing a key detail which could implicate a friend in the crime, Sheringham decides to meddle with the scene.

Unusual classic with a twist ending
Revisado: 02-29-24
Started out with a long houseparty that did become a bit chatty. Then went on with the detective trying to manipulate the inquiery in amusing but unlikely ways. But towards the end I could not stop reading until the twist ending. Turned out I liked the book better than I thought during the first half of the story, although it may not be this authors best effort.

Poetry in prose and grand sense of wonder
Revisado: 06-15-23
This old classic has preserved much of its sense of wonder. The extremely old fashioned, rich, poetic and almost hypnotic language will put many readers off but if you are in a receptible and romantic mood you will enjoy this actually quite remarkable adventure. If this is ”purple language” I like it.

Revisado: 12-21-22
Classic stories well read. I did not, however, realise that all stories are read first in german and then in english. Thus the book contained only half as much as I had expected. As it turned out I did find the english translations useful in some places although most of it was fairly easy to understand in german.

Historia

Historia
First published in the pages of Weird Tales in 1934, C. L. Moore's Jirel of Joiry is the first significant female sword-and-sorcery protagonist and one of the most exciting and evocative characters the genre has ever known. Published alongside seminal works by H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the five classic fantasy tales included in this volume easily stand the test of time and often overshadow the storytelling power and emotional impact of stories by Moore's more famous contemporaries.

Revisado: 02-13-22
Dreamlike and imaginative sword and sorcery. C. L. Moore and Robert E. Howard remain two of the most readable pulp writers of the Weird Tales era. The stories are well plotted and sometimes verge on the surreal. The first two stories are closely connected and remind me of The Nightland by William Hope Hodgson. Well read. Recommended.

Good Poul Anderson anyway...
Revisado: 01-03-22
Skyways was a very good novel. In contrast to what another reviewer wrote I felt that it was well written and quite exiting. Anderson had a poetic and romantic side which shows here. The ending sort of laid the ground for more to come, but as far as I know he never wrote a sequel. The Smith novel was OK and perfectly readable. The Coblentz was not so good. A bit boring. I liked his even older stories from the pulps better. They had more ”sense of wonder”.

Before Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas, the pulp-science-fiction writers of the 1950s and 1960s were writing some of the hippest genre literature of the era. Listen to three more stories from the pioneers of the early days of pulp science fiction in this final volume of the Galaxy Trilogy series.

Three good old SF novels
Revisado: 12-31-21
This Volume 4 is the best of the Galaxy Trilogy series. The other three all have at least one novel that is a bit substandard in one way or another, but in this collection the standard in uniformly high. Not that these stories are masterpieces but they are all good. The ”Grinnell” story is one of Wollheims best and the Long novel is likewise one of Longs better efforts. Chandler is usually good, and this early Rimworld story is up to his normal standard, allthough the adventures are perhaps not as extravagant as in his later Grimes books. The reading is also good, Recommended.
