Historia
Deciding if she wants to go into real estate becomes a life-or-death choice for Aurora "Roe" Teagarden. A naked corpse is discovered at her first house showing. And when a second body is found in another house for sale, it becomes obvious that there is a very cool killer at large in Lawrenceton, one who knows a great deal about real estate-and maybe too much about Roe.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-07-24
I love this author and was disappointed to experience the way she characterized people of color in stereotypical jobs, personality and especially terms used. I was especially let down by the casual way one character is dismissed from the pool of suspects because the deceased hates “blacks.”
I know this book has southern roots but I wish the author wrote with more kindness in mind of the experience of a person of color- how it must feel to read those words placed casually in a story, as if it would have no impact.

The narrator’s portrayal is at odds with the sarcasm of the character- it’s distracting to have everything read in a whiny tone and inflection.

Sigh x2
Revisado: 11-16-21
The storyline is interesting enough but again, all the female characters’ are inevitably reduced to tired tropes of “smart-n-sexy” or “too young but.. sexy” and of course…. “silly and man obsessed.”
disappointing.

Historia
The body in the arroyo belonged to a man who’d made his living plundering ancient Indian sites. And the only witness to the crime would not change his story: a demon had killed his friend. Sheriff Cliff Lansing has an unexplained death on his hands, and it’s only the beginning. In Las Palmas, New Mexico, a US senator is on his way to meet a Zuni shaman who is holding up a land swap involving 150,000 acres in New Mexico and Arizona. The senator intends to push the deal through. But in a long, dark night on the high desert, he is led into a storm of violence and shame.

Sigh
Revisado: 11-11-21
While the storyline is interesting enough… I find the consistent reduction of the female characters to their sexuality to be distracting. To me it’s a sign of immaturity on the author’s part, if all there is to say about a female character is her sexuality- leave it out.

Predictable
Revisado: 10-08-20
It mades me sad to say... this installment of the series was so predictable I wasn’t sure if I would be able to bring myself to finish the novel.
The characters are, as always, written so well as to be alive and I love John Lee’s narration. The problem is that as you meet each main character you KNOW exactly the course of their thread in the overall weave. There was only one surprise and that was with minor characters.
I had to force myself to finish this one, not because is wasn’t masterfully worded but because it reads as a literary fill-in-the-blank assignment- just randomly fill in the open spaces with character names and let it all shake out.

5 Stars? What did I miss?
Revisado: 10-01-20
The other reviews have me wondering... 5 stars? What did I miss?
The phrasing-
Awkward
The narration- stilted, halting and painful to endure.
The narration of this book sounds almost as if it’s being narrated by A.I. The narration falls flat with the tone an inflection emphasis placed awkwardly, at best, and completely off, at worst.
The story itself has phrasing that is out of order and combined with the poor narration, it makes it this book a subpar audio experience.
I’m suspect of the 5 star ratings- there is no way this narration or story even comes close.

Come for the hilarious plot and stay for the bloopers at the end!
Revisado: 05-10-19
A sense of humor is required for this listen. Do not attempt if you’re devoid of one, the experience will be lost on you!
The first in what looks to be a series, this book had me cracking up the whole way through. The BEST part though, was the unexpected blooper reel at the end! I was shaking with laughter hearing Phil Thron cracking up over the dialog and plot lines.
I would’ve loved to listen to the whole book with the bloopers left in!!
