Historia
Six years after four family members died of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and 18-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune.

Weird
Revisado: 09-27-20
This is a very strange book about a disturbed young girl who lives with her disabled uncle and agoraphobic sister. The sister takes care of the other two, and is responsible for nearly everything day to day. Many years ago the sister was tried for poisoning her entire family, but acquitted. The townsfolk still believe she is guilty and are less than kind to the family.
The story is told from the perspective of the young girl, who adores her sister. After a short time it becomes clear that the girl does not think the way other people do, and this becomes more clear as the book progresses.
I do enjoy how the sisters kept a positive attitude no matter how bad things got for them. I did not feel that the book had a very satisfying ending, and I understood the surprise reveal/plot twist almost at the beginning of the book. However, it was still an interesting and strange read. Not the best book in the world, but worth reading.

Great Performance
Revisado: 12-11-19
This is an old story, which can be a little boring to read. However the actors with their different voices and inflections allow this story to be told from the point of view of the characters, and along with the sound effects, really bring this to life. It's quite an enjoyable listen.

Inspiring
Revisado: 10-08-19
I read an article by the author which was so useful I went out an bought this audio book the same day. Just like the article, this book is full of great info for starting a business, but from a perspective that you don't get in a lot of other books. The emphasis is that in order to be able to scale a single person or husband/wife business up to a million dollar level, you will likely have to be able to outsource some functions. She has some interesting perspectives on how to do that. This book is certainly worth a read. Her perspectives on health care costs were also comforting, just knowing that I am not alone in paying ridiculous monthly bills.
However, I do with the author had not chosen to read it herself. I think a professional narrator would have been a more enjoyable listen.

Cute
Revisado: 09-24-19
This is a cute little love story about a tree nymph who has been hurt before. She moves to a new town filled with many other magical creatures as well as humans trying to live in a combined community. There, she meets Rob, a mathematician working with "the league" trying to figure out a problem with the magical rift in the town that is causing humans to develop powers. But we don't get to far into that part here. Apparently this is a series with dozens of other books, which I'm assuming explore more for the viewpoints of the many other interesting characters we encounter as Rob and Ingrid (the tree nymph) get together. If you like cute, short, magical romance stories, you will likely enjoy this.

Cute
Revisado: 09-20-19
This audio version has an added benefit. It plays the songs mentioned in the book softly in the background when appropriate. The volume is set perfectly so that the music does not interfear with your ability to hear what is being read. And the youth orchestra that plays it is pretty darn good too.
This is a cute children's novel about a 7th grade girl who attends a boarding school for magic created by music. Its not bad, but not great either, mostly because of the plot holes. Except for these slightly unbelievable holes, it's well written. However, the author does carry on a bit unnecessary, and it's all pretty predictable, right up to the end. But it's a nice easy read with some creativity too. Not 5 start material, but worth reading.

Excellent and full of practical tips
Revisado: 05-14-18
This is a Great Courses class, and like most of their courses, it is very good. It is loaded with great tips that are easy to employ and backed up by science. Unlike some, you can just listen; there are no course materials or images for you to view. Some of the exercises cannot be completed while driving. However I just practised those at home. The instructor's tip include breathing exercises as well. A summary: energy is composed of the ability to pay attention plus awareness. You need to strengthen these as well as control your environment in order to have more energy. Taking care of yourself is only part of what you need to do.

Revisado: 04-20-17
I recommend regularly reading books like these to keep you upbeat and moving forward. But after awhile, they do begin to sound all the same. These authors didn't have too much new to say, but even the same 'ol is good to hear.

I'm divided
Revisado: 03-07-17
The narrator does an exceptional job with this story, with a unique voice for each character. I was a bit disappointed with the story however. It is a great source for personal growth, but I wish it wasn't quite so heavy handed with religion. As a nonchristian, it is very difficult to find books on personal growth without religion. This was cute, and I got a lot out of it, I just wished more authors understood that they don't have to cram their beliefs down your throat for you to get the point.

'Ah for darkness...not the darkness of a house which coops up a man among furniture, but the darkness where he can be free!' Maurice Hall knows he must choose between living life in the shadows or denying himself a chance at love and fulfilment. Aware of his attraction to the same sex, in a time where it was considered unlawful and immoral to have homosexual desires, Maurice must decide whether to battle or submit to a prejudiced 20th-century English society.

A classic novel
Revisado: 12-21-16
A turn-of-the-century romance where the hero struggles to find himself in a homophobic England. Between the narrator and the novel's punctuation, it's sometimes a little difficult to follow, but overall draws you in. I stopped reading for awhile when I became afraid something bad was about to happen (it did), but couldn't stay away. If you enjoy a Charles Dickens style novel, I think you would enjoy this book. If not, I would go for something more modern.
