Absolutely incredible!!!
Revisado: 09-07-24
Even better than the first! Such subtle and deeply flawed characters. Such a compelling and inexorable plot! I was so tightly wound through the last third or so it was causing me irl stress between listing sessions, haha.
But my favorite part about this series has to be the retrospective narrative by Helena. This is something that would typically not work for me (knowing the pov character will survive, knowledge of what’s to come, straightforward explanation of the characters’ feelings), but it somehow works so beautifully well I actually don’t understand how the author accomplished it.
I’m very glad I waited to start this book until the third was released. I started it immediately after finishing this one and I cannot wait to see how this story concludes.
Also, the reader is amazing!!! I can’t imagine this story without her narration. This is one of those that I’ll always hear in her voice, even when reading the text.

Historia
In a Pacific Northwest hospital far from the Rummani family’s ancestral home in Palestine, the heart of a stillborn baby begins to beat and her skin turns vibrantly, permanently cobalt blue. On the same day, the Rummanis’ centuries-old soap factory in Nablus is destroyed in an air strike. The family matriarch and keeper of their lore, Aunt Nuha, believes that the blue girl embodies their sacred history, harkening back to a time when the Rummanis were among the wealthiest soap-makers and their blue soap was a symbol of a legendary love.

Enjoyed the story and the chemistry of the couple. The world was intriguing. Very adult content, but the warning at the beginning makes that very clear! ;)

Gorgeous!
Revisado: 03-21-23
I loved it! Beautiful and heartbreaking, constantly compelling. I would love to read a sequel! Wonderfully done, especially for a debut novel!
The first chapter was particularly captivating. I didn’t know the genre or read any synopsis or anything at all before starting this book, not even the back cover blurb, and I’m so glad I didn’t! Imagine my shock at the ending of that fist chapter!
Looking forward to Holland’s future work!

How the heck have I slept on this amazing trilogy?! I guess at least I don’t have to wait for the last book lol.
I LOVE these characters, the writing, the story, the twists, the stuff I don’t predict, the stuff I DO predict, literally everything. The performance is perfect. I am in love.
