Historia
Chopin's heart is carried back to Warsaw in secret by his adoring sister. A woman must return to her native Poland in order to poison her terminally ill high school sweetheart, and a young man slowly descends into madness when his wife and child mysteriously vanish during a vacation and just as suddenly reappear. Through these brilliantly imagined characters and stories, interwoven with haunting, playful, and revelatory meditations, Flights explores what it means to be a traveler, a wanderer, a body in motion not only through space but through time.

An unpredictably delightful book. You should read this with no expectation and just glide in the beauty of the written words, the observations and sublime descriptions.

Superb Zola
Revisado: 09-03-21
A delicate tale of human emotions, written with sublime skills. Narration is great except for the French accents which falter often. The book is not about French speaking English. This makes the narration indiscernible at times. Wish she kept her calm voice throughout.

Historia
Mehar, a young bride in rural 1929 Punjab, is trying to discover the identity of her new husband. Married to three brothers in a single ceremony, she and her now-sisters spend their days hard at work in the family’s “china room,” sequestered from contact with the men - except when their domineering mother-in-law, Mai, summons them to a darkened chamber at night. Curious and strong willed, Mehar tries to piece together what Mai doesn’t want her to know.

Great chronicler and stylist
Revisado: 08-31-21
Such beautiful, enchanting language, it's like a painting superimposed on photograph. An old tale, with notes of a contemporary story, reflecting a much larger social realm, delivered with shining phrases.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

Joyous!
Revisado: 09-20-19
I read the book when it first came out. Listening to it now was just as joyous an experience. A sensitive, allegorical, magically woven tale of other realms of human relationships.

Historia
Make sure the kids aren’t around! Just because you’re a grown-up doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the art of the children’s bedtime story. Nick Offerman presents this collection of 12 short stories written in the style of a classic kids' tale, but with a decidedly dark and adult approach. What really happened after Snow White died, from the perspective of the one medically trained dwarf? A naive wizard professor reports back from the trenches of an underprivileged school of magic. And much more!

creative adaptation

Wonderful dramatic readings. The stories were creatively adapted. The cynical humor had an urban pun to it.

Historia
With the coruscating gaze that informed The Sympathizer, in The Refugees Viet Thanh Nguyen gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will.

Sensitive
Revisado: 01-21-18
Written with a certain cultural and aesthetic sensitivity that I have not encountered in modern refugee literature. It offers a perspective that gives another perspective, sometimes of those who never left.
Some stories are more captivating than others. Some dragged a little
