Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Terrifying
Revisado: 04-06-24
There’s an awful lot of speculation. There’s an awful lot of human beings doing the wrong thing when it counts. I don’t doubt that this scenario is potentially very accurate, but I can’t live in a mindset in which it is. It’s too terrible. To say that I hope this never happens would be an understatement of the highest degree. This book is about the absolute worst case scenario and it involves an awful lot of conjecture. I’m going to sleep to have nightmares now. Goodnight. Don’t read this book. It’s terrifying.

Historia
White rural voters hold the greatest electoral sway of any demographic group in the United States, yet rural communities suffer from poor healthcare access, failing infrastructure, and severe manufacturing and farming job losses. Rural voters believe our nation has betrayed them, and to some degree, they’re right. In White Rural Rage, Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman explore why rural Whites have failed to reap the benefits from their outsize political power and why, as a result, they are the most likely group to abandon democratic norms and traditions.

Accurate, if we’re being honest.
Revisado: 03-13-24
I grew up in the rural Deep South and was fortunate enough to escape it. This book details hard truths but truths that, nonetheless, must be confronted by our consistently offended rural neighbors if they are to advance. Not everybody living in rural areas is an affront to intellectual progress, civilized culture and democracy, but I can attest that there are a majority that are.

Perfection in every way
Revisado: 02-28-24
The writing stands alone as uniquely brilliant (obviously) but the narration really adds a wonderful dimension to it. This is the best.
…gotta run. Starting The Two Towers now.

Historia
Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military had become the most divisive issue facing the new government. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect American commerce against the Mediterranean pirates, or drain the treasury and provoke hostilities with the great powers? The founders, particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams, debated these questions fiercely and switched sides more than once.

I wish it hadn’t been abridged. It’s such a fantastic book in its entirety and Stephen Lang is an amazing narrator.

Historia
Few journalists working today have covered Donald Trump more extensively than Maggie Haberman. And few understand him and his motivations better. Now, demonstrating her majestic command of this story, Haberman reveals in full the depth of her understanding of the 45th president himself, and of what the Trump phenomenon means.

Good book. Well written and researched. Same story as countless others.
Revisado: 10-09-22
The author did a wonderful job capturing Donald J. Trump’s personality with all of his bravado, fecklessness, selfishness, idiocy, insecurity, dishonesty and treachery. In short, all things we all already knew (or refuse to acknowledge). If you don’t like Trump, you will continue to dislike him. If you do like Trump, this isn’t going to change your mind and you weren’t going to read it anyway.
I’ve read my last book about the 45th President. I despise him and I earnestly believe he is a dangerous, uniquely stupid and self-centered man. Hopefully we can all move onto the next big thing because this subject has become tiresome.

Historia
Although most people associate the term D-day with the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, it is military code for the beginning of any offensive operation. In the Pacific theater during World War II there were more than one hundred D-days. The largest - and last - was the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, which brought together the biggest invasion fleet ever assembled, far larger than that engaged in the Normandy invasion. D-Days in the Pacific tells the epic story of the campaign waged by American forces to win back the Pacific islands from Japan.

Horrible narrating
Revisado: 09-12-16
Honestly the worst, most annoying narration I've ever heard. I couldn't finish this book. Getting through the fourth chapter proved to be too much.
