Great Except For One Thing........
Revisado: 11-24-24
The story idea is great. Narrator is pretty good--a little too much in the dramatic pauses at times.
My only complaint about the Sertorius scrolls is the incredible amount of time spent by the author on the angst of the main character.
I understand that the internal reflections of the character are integral to the story BUT when it is so drawn out as to affect the narrative flow it becomes a bit too much.
With that off my chest it won't stop me from listening to the remainder of the scrolls as I'm too engaged now to stop. I'll just have to speed through the over dramatic self reflections.

Little Less Angst Would Make It Flow Better.....
Revisado: 10-23-24
I'm a big fan of Roman era military fiction and I almost gave this book five stars.
I liked the storyline, the narrator and the overall character development. But there was something a little off and I suspect it has more to do with my own preconceptions when reading ancient military fiction.
There's a lot of time spent describing inner angst to the point that I got the sense that this could have easily been turned into one of the plethora of modern autobiographical experiences written by soldiers who've served in Iran or Afghanistan. As if the author was undergoing some kind of cathartic exercise.
Still, its good enough for me to continue listening to this series..

Historia
The British Army at the end of the nineteenth century was not a fair place. Despite the reforms, a bad officer could still ruin men's lives and Jack Roberts discovers that despite being a hero of Rorke's Drift, that means nothing when a superior has influence. He becomes a soldier serving in the Egyptian campaign where he learns not only new skills but how to deal with the new responsibility fatherhood brings. Throughout it all one thing is constant, he is a soldier of the queen, a redcoat with a rifle.

Almost...
Revisado: 10-23-24
The 'Soldier of Queen' series evokes mixed feelings from me.
The problem starts with some of the historical detail and timelines which stretch from the slightly confusing to outright twighlight zone level. An example of the latter is the British campaign against the Mahdi in which Robert's participates.
In Hosker's version Colonel Billy Hicks marches his Egyptian division next to Wolsey's advance force in the failed relief of 'Chinese' Gordon at Khartoum. In reality 'Pahsa' Hicks was slain a few months before the siege of Khartoum actually began. A fact which even Hollywood got right in its 1966 movie epic version titled "Khartoum". A simple internet search would've revealed his error.
That said Hosker's development of various characters, including Roberts and his family, is quite nice and I found myself continuing the series even with some of the sloppy historical research.
The narrator was pretty good except for his depiction of 'Middy', the young Midshipman turned Corporal. Somewhere along the line 'Middy' developed the deep baritone gruffness of a seasoned older campaigner. In reality he would have been, at most, in his early to mid twenties. And he made Major Dickenson sound like a Swiss mercenary--which bothered me less.
Still, despite the flaws, something drew me in and I purchased the whole series anyways. I suspect because of the nostalgic GA Henty similarity Hosker evokes so well.

Historia
Few American battles have been so extended, savage, and personal. A handful of Americans volunteered to live among six thousand Vietnamese, training farmers to defend their village. Such "Combined Action Platoons" (CAPs) are not a lost footnote about how the war could have been fought; only the villagers remain to bear witness. This is the story of 15 resolute young Americans matched against two hundred Viet Cong; how a CAP lived, fought, and died; and why the villagers remember them to this day.

West writing like the short precise bursts of an M60(old timers will recall that beast). Very powerful. An indictment of military bureaucracy and a sad reminder of what might have been and those we eventually failed

In a 2010 terrorist plot, Al-Qaeda hid a bomb in a FedEx shipment addressed to Reynald de Chatillon, a knight who had died centuries ago in the Crusades. A reviled figure in Islamic history, often portrayed as the very epitome of brutality, Reynald remains as controversial - and as vividly present in the minds of many in the Middle East - as the story of the Crusades themselves.

Listening to a non Flynn tale of Mitch Rapp is like drinking non-alcoholic beer. You get most of the flavor without the buzz. Mills is also naive about political and corporate machinations. Still a decent enough listen

Revisado: 12-14-22
The author might have been on medication or illicit drugs while writing this. It’s also possible he was so determined to end the series for good he wrote this horrible finale so no one would ever want to hear from Corbett again. This magnificent series deserved better

Historia
Cantankerous and dishevelled, Chief Inspector Dover is no one's idea of a model detective - but he does have an uncanny knack for solving crimes. In these radio dramas, set in the 1960s and '70s, he and his long-suffering sergeant, Charlie McGregor, investigate sinister cases of kidnap and murder. The first four are adapted from Joyce Porter's novels, while the latter two are original stories based on her characters.

Another Great Irreverent Police Procedural
Revisado: 11-20-22
Wasn't sure I was going to like this combination humor and police procedural but I did. I love Chief Inspector Dover's character and the way he was portrayed. It would make a great play or tv series but I understand why that's likely impossible due to how woke the market place has gotten.
