Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

The reader made it impossible to follow the story. I really tried to like this book, but just couldn’t understand the reader. I decided to return the book to audible .

Historia
Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book when it was chosen by my back ok club.
I couldn’t put it down. Fascinating in depth coverage of 911 and the people involved in person. It covered events that I was unaware of or have forgotten. Everyone in the USA should read this book.

Tedious follow up to his first novel
Revisado: 11-05-18
I found this book to drag on with tedious predictable characters. The reading was very distracting from the story. The same character often had a different sounding voice making it hard to follow. There was nothing about this novel that made we want to continue listening. I honestly couldn't wait for it to be over so that I could listen to something else.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Detective Ballard is a great character
Revisado: 10-01-18
Another great detective novel by Michael Connelly. I’m looking forward to more books with her in it. Lots of twist and turns. As usual Connelly weaves it all together in Ana enjoyable tale that you can’t put down.
In addition Katherine Moennig’s narration brought life to the story.

Lina is just like any other 15-year-old Lithuanian girl in 1941. She paints, she draws, she gets crushes on boys - until one night when Soviet officers barge into her home, tearing her family from the comfortable life they've known. Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia.

A must read
Revisado: 05-28-16
I've read many books about Nazi atrocities. This one covers Stalin and Russian brutality toward their citizens. The story is harsh. It is told from the viewpoint of a brave young girl trying to survive in a Siberian camp with her mother and brother. The characters are rich. The grit it to to survived makes a compelling story. It is also a story to remind us that we as a nation need to do what we can to prevent this from happening to other groups.

A perfect course
Revisado: 04-11-16
Having been to London and read many books set in London and England. I had some familiarity. This course puts it all together in an any easy to follow timeline . Professor Bucholz is wonderful. I felt like I was listening to a novel rather than a history course. I recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of London.

Worth your time
Revisado: 02-14-16
This novel enters the minds and hearts of a family struggling with the prejudices and expectations of society and the family . The father is the rare Asian man in town. He endures racial slurs and slight through ignorance. The mother struggles with the classic role of wife and mother vs career. The children suffer being the only Asian Americans in school . A place In a time where being different is not cool. This piles on to the usual adolescent angst. The meaningful parents add to the distress of Lydia through overly ambitious educational and social expectations . Lydia suffers from too much parenting while her brother suffers from not enough . Sadly the family spirals out of control.
