Historia
College freshman Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He humiliated himself trying to pick up a cute guy, he hasn't made any friends at school, and his stupidly hot jerk of a TA gave him a crappy grade on his paper. He's going to drop Adam Hawkins' film class and start fresh tomorrow after he's had a good sulk. But Parker's about to find out what a bad day really looks like - if he can survive the night. A virus is unleashed, transforming infected people into zombielike killers.

Honestly phenomenal
Revisado: 04-15-25
I read reviews before I got this title stating that it surpassed anything they thought for it, and that they were all pleasantly surprised. I can confirm EVERY BIT of this. It’s honestly an amazing book and I hope beginning to a series (probably already is- I haven’t looked past this particular title yet). I felt like the narrator was meh, but the writing and characters more than made up for whatever issues I found with the performance. I loved Adam and really saw myself in Parker- I can’t wait for the next installment!!!

Historia
The devil you know is never the one you should trust. Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the Morrigan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to Election Day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second. But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the case: a standoffish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister.

What’s Hailey Turner’s favorite hairstyle?
Revisado: 02-13-25
I adore this series, and frankly, everything else Hailey Turner has ever done. I just wanted to take two seconds to ask if ANY woman in her literary worlds doesn’t wear their hair in a “loose chignon”? I mean, there may have been one time where a woman wore her hair in a “high tail”, but other than that, every woman MUST KNOW how to do a loose chignon. I’m sorry, those are the rules.

Adoration, for the most part
Revisado: 01-19-25
I adore this series. There’re so many aspects that I think are perfectly done. I have literally one grievance— the novels clearly state that Liam is Irish, and the narrator goes on to give him a SCOTTISH accent for 3 WHOLE BOOKS?! Insanity. Tell the narrator to take a class, or at the very least, learn how to do an Irish accent on YouTube. It’s not particularly difficult. It just feels like all of the other ways the narrator is wonderful are sorta dimmed by this obvious and easily fixable issue.

Awesome premise, bad performance, bad magic system
Revisado: 12-30-24
I love this story- I’ve gone through the entire series now.
1) I LOVE this premise. It’s genuinely wonderful. There’s so much to explore!
2) I actually like this narrator, and there’re many things he does really well- the most impressive is that he voices a preteen boy who ACTUALLY sounds like a preteen boy, and not a narrator attempting to do so. I’m not sure I could do this convincingly! The problem (1 of 2) is that he mispronounces pretty much everything, and that makes me worry about his reading comprehension and cognition. And it’s not terribly difficult words. Anyone with a 10th grade reading level could competently read these words without error. Second issue has to deal with comprehension as well, as he tends to stop reading mid-sentence in a way that I can only assume is indicative of someone pausing as they leisurely turn the page in their book.
3) Now, I am an unabashed southern guy, but there is such a thing as English Standard Voice. For those who aren’t failed theatre actors or linguists, American Standard Voice is a voice that is devoid of accent. The “gold standard” for this, as I was taught is George Takei. But this narrator mangles words that render the narration meaningless for some by affecting his own rich southern accent, saying things like “mall” when he means “mile” or “pall” when he means “pile”. There’re other examples, but this particular sound kept throwing itself at me tonight like a dead fish aimed at my face.
Once again, I adore this story and premise, but it’s undermined by an ultimately subpar narrator.

What he doesn’t have is a relationship, and he swears he’s not looking for one. I’d been hoping for a story about Wade finding happiness ever since he was introduced. This was done in a perfect fashion, allowing room for Wade’s trauma and growth.

Historia
Pixies are supposed to be petite, beautifully lithe creatures with gossamer wings. Sporting luscious, ombre pink hair and fluttering pink wings, Phil meets two out of three of those criteria. At over six feet tall, no one would dare call Phil petite. As a home-and-hearth pixie, Phil yearns to find a home and family he can bond to. When no one's willing to hire a pixie of his stature, Phil is forced to find work elsewhere. Turns out, pixies make terrible bouncers.

Prick hole and an unfettered southern accent
Revisado: 01-24-24
First things first- I LOVE this series. It’s an intricately woven, beautifully crafted world. But:
1) nobody says prickhole. NOBODY. So why do you make everyone say it? It’s there’s generational cursing, it should be something unfamiliar, so we know they’re cursing, but not overusing some weird insult we all, as a people, don’t use, like “frank trodders” or “God’s bloomin onion”. Neither of which are you allowed to use. Those are mine. lol
2) I enjoy a good ol’ southern accent every once in a while- I’m from Georgia, so I’m surrounded by them. But it’s not what you want in an audio novel listened to millions, especially ESL, if they can understand that “mahls” means “miles”, etc. I love his voice and intonation, but he’s too green for this. Especially since he can’t let his accent take a backseat. I spent two years convincing my vocal coach I didn’t need him, bc I could speak in American standard, and that his efforts were better used on that jersey girl who couldn’t say “you’re welcome” without telegraphing where she’s from.
Long story short— great novel, and great “aspiring” narrator.

Historia
As a necromancer, Shae loses a little more of himself every time he uses his magic. Always cold, always touch-starved, the only thing that helps is human contact. But that's hard to come by when those same dark powers scare everyone away from him. Nobody likes a necromancer. Arthur's still bitter and broken after his last lover stabbed him in the back, and the last thing he needs is another brush with evil. When he agrees to escort the wandering necromancer north, he's just doing a public service. But he never expected Shae to be so clingy. Or distractingly attractive.

Great story, poor performance
Revisado: 10-13-23
I love this book. The themes of feeling unwanted, abandonment issues, and first love all made me teary. The story is fantastic. I just wish it didn’t sound like the narrator did this all in one take and said “I don’t do second takes- it’s good enough.” This book would’ve benefitted greatly from a better storyteller, like Greg Boudreaux or Gary Furlong, or many, many others who don’t pause for ridiculously long periods between paragraphs.

I don't have time for mysterious strangers. Even the really hot ones. I met him in a bar the night before I left to move across the country - and I never expected to see him again. But then he followed me.... It would be creepy if he was just a stalker - but he’s not. He’s a protector, shielding me from a group of nutjobs who believe in dragons. He saved my life - but now it’s my turn. And apparently, the nutjobs aren’t wrong. Dragons are real. And I hold the key to saving them all.

Great story, TERRIBLE NARRATOR.
Revisado: 07-03-23
I love this series, but every couple of minutes, this narrator mispronounces a common word. It takes thirty seconds to google “how do I pronounce this”. But no- you’d rather make listeners cringe their faces off bc you couldn’t be bothered. I get you were probably hired bc your bass is lovely, but do better. Also, don’t do accents anymore. Your attempt at a Ukrainian accent is more insulting than endearing. If you aren’t CERTAIN that your accent is impeccable, DON’T DO IT.
