Historia
Golgotha Falls lies in a desolate and blighted valley in Northern Massachusetts where, in 1919, Father Bernard K. Lovell, priest of the Church of the Eternal Sorrows, fell prey to isolation and despair and entered a dark night of madness, necrophilia, and suicide. Then, in 1978, a Jesuit priest was sent to reconsecrate the church but found himself seized in the foul grip of bestiality. Now, Father Malcolm, a saintly priest, has arrived to do battle with the forces of Satan that have possessed the church.

Entertaining story, great reading!
Revisado: 11-30-20
This novel kept me listening. I didn't find the actions of all the characters to make sense based on their character development (which is why i gave only 4 stars for story), but overall I enjoyed it. The reader did a great job.

A riveting new haunted house mystery that will keep you guessing until the end! When Peyton and Benjamin Fletcher inherit a dilapidated house in the quiet town of Falconwood, Connecticut from Peyton's grandfather, all they want to do is get rid of it. Unfortunately, the will stipulates that the couple must live in the house for a minimum of six months before they sell it. As Peyton and Ben try to make the best of the situation, Peyton discovers the house is inhabited by ghosts, and they aren't happy with the mansion's new occupants.

Great story with writing issues
Revisado: 09-05-19
I have to say that the plot of this story was very creative and engaging. The narrator did a great job giving everyone a different voice so it was easy to tell who was speaking. I did have two major issues with the book:. The first is that I thought the main character, Peyton, was really dislikable. She seemed shallow and lazy, and I just never could vibe with her reasons for wanting to divorce Ben. I did like the other characters pretty well though. My second concern (and this one significantly detracted from my enjoyment of the story) was that this book really needed a more nitpicky editor. As several others have mentioned, there are parts of the book that reiterate everything that's already been written, almost like a "previously on" in a television series. There were also little continuity issues such as switching gender pronouns, stating a scene with a cappuccino that spontaneously becomes a black coffee, and some situations where characters who had met previously were introduced as if for the first time. I like the author's creativity and will read other books by her because if they are as interesting as this one without all the writing issues I anticipate they'll be quite enjoyable.

Historia
Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

Not as good or as creepy as I hoped...
Revisado: 11-11-12
What did you like best about The Historian? What did you like least?
I think the best thing about this is the writing, in a way--Kostova has a way with description and the plot of the story could be really engaging. My biggest problem with it was that the detailed descriptions and exposition were hard to make it through; I found myself easily distracted while listening--I'd zone out and come back to realize I'd missed 20 minutes and have to rewind and figure out what was going on. This is one of those books that I think would be much easier for me in paper format--the plot just doesn't unfold quickly enough to keep me engaged in audio format.
Would you ever listen to anything by Elizabeth Kostova again?
I would give her another try because I think it was a creative approach to a vampire story (and that's in short supply these days). I would definitely try her books in hard copy and will probably find The Historian in print form to read.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I give the narrator credit for slogging through...
Do you think The Historian needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No; I rather dislike sequels in general.

Historia
It started with a beautiful woman and a challenge. As a gift for her husband, Alyssa Bradford approaches Eric Shaw to make a documentary about her father-in-law, Campbell Bradford, a 95-year-old billionaire whose past is wrapped in mystery. Eric grabs the job even though there are few clues to the man's past—just the name of his hometown and an antique water bottle he's kept his entire life. In Bradford's hometown, Eric discovers an extraordinary history—a glorious domed hotel where movie stars, presidents, athletes, and mobsters once mingled.

Really Creepy
Revisado: 06-26-11
This book is very atmospheric--it's not a "jump out of your seat" kind of scary book, but it builds up a level of creepiness as you listen. The narration was well done--didn't detract from the story at all. It is the first Michael Kortya book I've listened to but I will definitely look for other titles from him. I didn't get anything accomplished after downloading this title because all I wanted to do was listen to the story.
