Historia
Lee Fiora is an intelligent, observant 14-year-old when her father drops her off in front of her dorm at the prestigious Ault School in Massachusetts. She leaves her animated, affectionate family in South Bend, Indiana, at least in part because of the boarding school’s glossy brochure, in which boys in sweaters chat in front of old brick buildings, girls in kilts hold lacrosse sticks on pristinely mown athletic fields, and everyone sings hymns in chapel.

Whiny & boring
Revisado: 04-23-25
While I appreciated the audio reader did a great job, this narrator was whiny and difficult to like or feel empathy for. I liked her roommate Martha and her mom, but other than that, most characters were unlikable, and the story was boring. I was about halfway when I realized how bad it was and that it wasn’t going to get much better, but I paid for the book, so I was going to finish. I was disappointed because I have liked other books by Sittenfield.

Determined to pick up the pieces, Jess decides it’s time for a new beginning. Unable to part with her grandmother’s cherished books, she packs them all up and moves to a tiny cottage in the English countryside. To her surprise, Jess discovers that she’s now the owner of an old red phone box that was left on the property.

Repetitive narrative
Revisado: 02-18-25
I liked the community developed in the story, but I found the main character’s inner monologues repetitive and annoying. The ending also seemed very abrupt, but most of the characters were likable.

Historia
What happened was this: Jenny Slate was a human mammal who sniffed the air every morning hoping to find another person to love who would love her, and in that period there was a deep dark loneliness that she had to face and befriend, and then we are pleased to report that she did fall in love, and in that period she was like chimes, or a flock of clean breaths, and her spine lying flat was the many-colored planks on the xylophone, but also she was rabid with fear of losing this love, because of past injury.

Odd stories
Revisado: 02-14-25
While this was not my favorite type of storytelling, others might appreciate the author’s quirkily odd perspective on life. I did relate to how becoming a mother is like something taking over your life, I don’t have enough imagination to explain it as the author does.

Inspired interviews
Revisado: 02-08-25
I loved listening to Malcolm Gladwell and Kenya Barris interview these people who are well known in their areas, but some of whom I knew little about. I gave 4 stars on performance because at times, I struggled to understand what Barris said and had to slow down and repeat the audio.

Historia
When NASA sent astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s the agency excluded women from the corps, arguing that only military test pilots—made up exclusively of men—had the right stuff. It was an era in which women were steered away from jobs in science and deemed unqualified for space flight. Eventually, though, NASA recognized its blunder and opened the application process to a wider array of hopefuls, regardless of race or gender. From a candidate pool of 8,000 six elite women were selected in 1978—Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, Shannon Lucid, and Rhea Seddon.

I liked listening to this well-narrated true story of the first six women astronauts in the U.S. I did struggle to keep them straight and wished I had the book rather than the audio at times, but I loved learning about these trailblazers and their lives.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Amazing story
Revisado: 01-19-25
I loved listening to the story of Sportcoat and all the people of the Causeway in 1969 NY. The characters are vibrant, well-drawn, and the narrator does an excellent job bringing them to life. I laughed out loud numerous times and found myself needing to know what happened to all of them, yet not wanting the story to end.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Excellent story
Revisado: 01-08-25
I liked listening to this story told from multiple perspectives of the people who live in Briarwood house, even the house’s perspective. The story alternates between Thanksgiving 1954 and early 1950 when Grace March moves in, changing the relationship dynamics of the women boarders to each other and to the family who owns the house. I also liked learning from the author’s note at the end that many of the characters were based on real people.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Strong women’s mystery
Revisado: 01-03-25
I liked listening to this mystery of a murder that a grandmother with cancer tries to solve with the help of her granddaughter and her reluctant daughter. Lana Rubicon is used to being in charge of her real estate business, but fighting cancer requires her full attention until murder distracts her and helps her realize she wants to rebuild relationships with her family.

Revisado: 12-30-24
I would give this 3.5 stars for the interesting twist the book with about 2 hours left. For the most part, I found most of the story far-fetched, but the twists at the end made me appreciate the book more. The narrator is great, and the book was entertaining.

Interesting memoir
Revisado: 12-25-24
I liked listening to this memoir/biography of former LA police officer & private detective who was a Fixer for movie stars and others. He lived an interesting life and became one of the few people who somewhat knew what happened to Marilyn Monroe, but it isn’t revealed until the very end of the book.
