Historia
Sam Bennett is the last of a dying breed, a former Mad Man, now made redundant after 30 years at the same advertising agency. Left with his awards and a case of Bulgarian whiskey (which he still can’t remember buying), Sam retreats to his home, awaits the summer arrival of his daughter and crazy son-in-law, Muller, is plagued by panic attacks and has an incident involving a pressed ham on a liquor store window with a young security guard named Max. .

A pleasant surprise
Revisado: 05-05-23
This author is new to me, but I'm glad I clicked on it. Several times I laughed aloud, not a common thing for me.
It's about life, healing, friendship and love. Refreshing in this era of gloom and doom.
Thank you, Mr. Cormack! Write on!

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 03-15-22
Two overwhelming accomplishments here. One, how all the members of the 1914 expedition (goal: walk to the South Pole ON FOOT) survived the elements which made every attempt to kill the human invaders. Two, how Alfred Lansing brought it to life for me on the printed page.
Do read it. It's genuinely incredible.

Historia
Drew Danner, a crime novelist with a house off L.A.'s storied Mulholland Drive, awakens in a hospital bed with a scar on his head and no memory of being found convulsing over his ex-fiancee's body the previous night. He was discovered holding a knife, her blood beneath his nails. He himself doesn't know whether he's guilty or innocent. To reconstruct the story, the writer must now become the protagonist, searching the corridors of his life and the city he loves.

Disappointed
Revisado: 12-16-21
It's bound to happen, a book you don't like from an author you do like. This was a double whammy, narrated by a performer I usually like who turned in a performance I couldn't (eventually) stand listening to any longer.
The book is incredible only in the sense that it has no credibility. I can manage suspension of disbelief to some extreme levels, but this one exceeded my ability.
The narration maintains a fever pitch nearly throughout the story and not only wore me out, but offended me. What was he mad at ME for? He doesn't even know me!
Too many places gave me the sense I was listening to a sermon, not a novel. A novelist shouldn't tell me how he feels about society, other members of society, and the universe at large. He should SHOW me.
All in all, as I said, disappointment.
