Exciting and original

Finally a heroine worthy of -maybe?- challenging Kate Daniels as my all-time favorite leading lady in the paranormal/fantasy genre! Best of all, I have lots of books in this series to look forward to.

Historia
Emerson Wilde has built the life of her dreams. Youngest Chamber of Commerce president in St. Cyprian history, successful indie bookstore owner, and lucky enough to have her best friends as found family? Done. But when Emerson is attacked by creatures that shouldn’t be real, and kills them with what can only be called magic, Emerson finds that the past decade of her life has been…a lie. St. Cyprian isn't your average Midwestern river town—it’s a haven for witches. When Emerson failed a power test years ago, she was stripped of her magical memories. Turns out, Emerson’s friends are all witches.

A waste of my monthly credit
Revisado: 07-17-24
What a waste of my monthly credit! I listened to this audiobook for as long as I could stick it out, but finally gave up and dropped it.
Emerson -the protagonist - thinks SO much of herself that she becomes unbearable after the first couple of chapters, constantly harping about how smart she is, how efficient, how utterly fan-tast-tic... Anyone like her would hardly have any friends, it becomes completely unbelievable that she has so many and soooooo loyal. Not to say anything about her hubris: no sooner has she discovered that she has magic, than she things she can manage any magical need or event by herself and even quarrels with her best friend who wants to coach and mentor her over the first few days until she finds her "magical feet".
And the writer just flogs some scenes to death -for example the initial magical attack at the cemetery. It was never-ending, repeating what had already been said over and over. Needless to say, Emerson never even credits her friend Jacob who flies to her rescue and is wounded again and again: after the event, she repeatedly states that she defeated the attacking critters herself.
Overall, an absolute let-down.

Historia
Men in Black meets Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum in the new urban fantasy novel starring seer Makenna Fraser and her fellow agents at Supernatural Protection & Investigation. The agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) know that fighting evil is a full-time job, especially when a new designer drug - with mind-blowing side effects - hits the streets. It's called Brimstone. And after the first few hits, you'll see every supernatural beast sharing the sidewalk, train, or office with you.

Nonstop action!
Revisado: 04-15-24
I am thoroughly enjoying the SPI series. The protagonist makes me laugh out loud with her sassy and witty running commentary, the acton and twists never stop, and I have listened to all the books so far in just one day!
I have read some reviews on other websites lamenting the lack of fiery sex and criticizing the fact that Mac and Ian do not hook up. Personally I prefer the slow burn romance in the book, the latent possibility that they might finally become a couple, and I am not spoiling anything if I say that Rake is becoming better and better as we get to know him. Plus the slow evolution of Mac’s love life ensures there will be several more SPI books in the series! 😄 Win-win in my view..

Historia
We're Supernatural Protection & Investigations, known as SPI. We battle the real monsters of myth and legend, but this Halloween we're searching for diamonds.... A gala opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has attracted the upper crust of Manhattan - and thieves. A trio of vile harpies attacks the crowd and steals the stars of the exhibition: a colorful cluster of seven cursed diamonds known as the Dragon Eggs. In the right mage's hands, each stone can pack a magical wallop.

Non stop action!
Revisado: 04-14-24
So far the first two books in the SPI series have kept me gripping the edge of my chair with the non stop action. Plus Mackenna’s running inner commentary often makes me laugh out loud. I have listened to both in one single day each. And it looks like romance will be added in the third book!
