Historia
In this classic 19th-century story of love battling pride, we meet Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth is a smart, well-rounded woman, and she is one of five unmarried daughters of Mr. Bennet, a country gentleman. Marriage is at the forefront Mrs. Bennet's mind, especially since her elderly husband's estate will not pass down to any of their daughters. The Bennets' small town is in an uproar when two highborn, eligible gentlemen, Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, come to stay.

Rosalyn Landor is one of the greatest narrators I’ve ever had the pleasure to discover. She brings “Pride and Prejudice” to life with her excellent variety of female and masculine voices.

Historia
With their supplies reclaimed and food enough for the future, the group at Barry's cabin can do more than just scrape by. Between fruitful gardens, great friends, and sturdy fences—not to mention karaoke—life in the zompoc is better than ever. Nothing is perfect, however. Across the country, safe zones are mysteriously going dark, and Oregon's summer weather has turned the forest into a tinderbox. As the unknown danger closes in and smoke begins to fill the sky, the survivors are all too aware of how quickly plans unravel, fences fall, and luck runs out.

Mia Gaskin nearly ruins this series.
Revisado: 07-12-24
Once again, SLF has created a zompoc masterpiece. And once again Clara’s narrator steals some of my enjoyment of those POV chapters.
I truly believed no one could surpass Anne Flosnik as the worst voice I’ve ever heard, but Mia Gaskin tops the cake. It’s frustrating and disappointing that the producer gave the job to three talented narrators and the fourth position to a baby-voiced woman who can’t handle masculine dialogue and creates these awkward pauses between paragraphs, even at 1.3x speed.
It’s too bad SLF wasn’t allowed to choose narrators. I don’t think Mia Gaskin would’ve made the short list.

Historia
I put my foster father behind bars. It doesn't matter that he deserved it. What matters is that he's powerful, manipulative, and now, he wants me dead. I can feel someone watching me. I know my time is running out. The only other person who cares if I live or die is a masked stranger. So I'm putting my life in the vigilante's hands - and maybe a piece of my heart along with it. Even though I'm worried that he's just as dangerous as the man I sent to prison.

Darth Gerbil and the pile of rocks
Revisado: 05-26-24
This FMC is dumber than a pile of rocks. She’s only 18 but she’s about as logical and reasonable as a four year old. I couldn’t believe it when she called her case worker guy panicking about how millions of dollars that had been stolen from a bank—an event that had absolutely nothing to do with her—had somehow ended up in her savings account. It doesn’t end there, but feel free to experience each and every one of them yourself.
She’s also freaking wishy-washy as hèll when it comes to life choices. It’s annoying. “I don’t think I like him (Eli), and I don’t think I should date him. I should probably just focus on myself and getting used to being Sadie. But he’s so hot! He’s like a supermodel and he’s got the cutest smile…” and sure enough, two minutes later she’s kissing him and holding his hand.
This book is an example of consistently bad writing. Lots of stüpid stereotypical characters and plot holes. And I don’t think the author has ever been to college. She doesn’t seem to understand what really happens or what dorms are like. Everyone who’s been to college knows the first day of classes is devoted to going over the syllabi, and while the author got that right for the Sadie’s first class, why would dūmb little goat still pull her notebook out of her bag for her second one? It’s stupid things like this throughout that kill the story. Zero common sense, little-to-no fact research, bad dialogue.
The quality of the story is subpar-at-best, but the narrator was ATROCIOUS and made the audiobook version a DNF. For the narrator’s “masculine” voice, I’m pretty sure the audio editor simply tinkered with the pitch, which gives the voice a ridiculous metallic quality. So for all of the male character dialogue, the narrator sounds like a gerbil speaking into a fan. Darth Gerbil.

Historia
It was supposed to be a harmless kiss at a lavish debutante ball. A clandestine moment with a handsome stranger. But unlike his namesake, my Romeo isn’t driven by love. He’s fueled by revenge. To him, I’m a chess piece. Leverage. His rival’s betrothed. To me, he is a man deserving of poison. A dark prince I refuse to marry. He thinks I’ll accept my fate. Well, I plan to rewrite it. And in my story, Juliet doesn’t die. But Romeo? He perishes.

This ended up being about 598 million times better than I expected. I liked the narrators—especially the guy.
The dialogue/text/narrative was FUNNY! I never LOL but I did a last the last couple of days.
I hadn’t wanted to waste credits on the book and the next, so I bought them for a combined $9 or so. I would’ve been fine using credits.

Historia
All of London is abuzz over the imminent arrival of Wulfric Bedwyn, the reclusive, cold-as-ice Duke of Bewcastle, at the most glittering social event of the season. Some whisper of a tragic love affair. Others say he is so aloof and passionless that not even the greatest beauty could capture his attention. But on this dazzling afternoon, one woman did catch the duke's eye - and she was the only female in the room who wasn't even trying.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-22-24
The duke was the most intriguing character in the series. I skipped the two previous books, too impatient to reach his story. I expected more for Wulfric. I never would have guessed the author would consider his better half to be a foolish and immature 29 year old barren woman with zero character arc.
Christina was supposed to be his counterpart in every possible way, which, admittedly, Wulfric needed, but her personality was over-the-top ridiculous. She had absolutely no class, self-discipline or dignity, and she was resolutely unapologetic about it. I was embarrassed for her when listening to the scenes where she was at her most stupid and ignorant. I get that was the whole point behind the pairing; however, it was too exaggerated and unbelievable. Balogh forced Christina’s ignorant character, rendering it unnatural feeling.

Miriam steps off the train looking for a job, not a husband. She refuses to be wed, and Gideon is unspeakably embarrassed by the misunderstanding. Stranded in Savage Wells, Miriam has nowhere else to go - and a secret that she's determined to keep from everyone. She has epilepsy, a condition that other doctors had claimed was symptomatic of madness, a diagnosis which prompted her family to have her committed to an asylum. Miriam is afraid that if Dr. MacNamara finds out the truth, he will send her back to the asylum, but Gideon is not like the other doctors she has encountered.

Bummer
Revisado: 01-19-24
I love Sarah M Eden’s Dread Penny Society series and “Ashes on the Moor.” I didn’t think she could do any wrong.
This book has been nothing but a disappointment. The lack of contractions (ie overly formal dialogue and narrative), the lame and unoriginal plot, and the MCs unwillingness to simply tell people, “There was a misunderstanding with the employment agency. Miriam (ugh the name) just came here for a job, not to get married.” Of course, doing so was too sensible a course of action. The MCs allowed the town to think the worst of her…and it just doesn’t work as a plot line.
And the narrator is…not good.

Awesome story, ill-suited narrator
Revisado: 01-16-24
We know the narrator isn’t vocal goddess Justine Eyre. I’m sure Eyre was as disappointed she couldn’t narrate as we are.
The recording studio chose Helen Lloyd because she’s able to do a plethora of accents, an obvious requirement for these stories. Unfortunately, Lloyd is better suited to middle-aged women of various backgrounds.
Lloyd was an absolutely unfortunate choice for this series with the majority of the main, secondary and tertiary characters being male. She nearly ruins it, but because the story is THAT GOOD I’m able to listen to carry on. Only perseverance and acceptance that I have no choice in her voice has allowed me to run through this audiobook a mere two times. I’ve listened to the first three at least fifteen times each, if not more.
If the recording company were to re-narrate it with Eyre, they’d have many very happy listeners and Sarah M Eden would have quite a bit more money in her bank account since we’d all willingly buy or dedicate a credit to a remake. But these companies don’t do that sort of thing, apparently.

Historia
With their Safe Zone overrun by the undead, taking refuge in the mountains seems like the safest bet for Rose, Tom, and the other survivors. There's one catch, however—between last spring's human exodus and a neighboring group's stockpiles, there's no food left to scavenge. They know to be wary of people and zombies, but a new adversary proves itself just as relentless—hunger. Supplies are slim in the wilderness, and living off the land is easier said than done. As winter sets in, and their food dwindles to nothing, they discover how far they'll go to save the ones they love.

Clara’s voice…ugh
Revisado: 11-29-23
It’s Sarah Lyons Fleming, so five stars all around. But I cannot stand Clara’s narrator. I skip every one of her chapters in all three books because her icky baby voice and those minute pauses she has a habit of creating drive me nuts.
The storyline in this book was phenomenal, per the usual. (Spoiler alert) It was really nice having a reprieve from gut-wrenching, heartbreaking character loss. I doubt SLF will go easy on us in the final book. August 2024 can’t come soon enough.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.
