Historia
Concealed by a shroud of dirty brown velvet was what looked like a heap of rags. In a desolate subterranean car park of a Shopping Centre, Dorothy Sanders pulled back the velvet curtain revealing the grim discovery of a woman’s body. Inspector Michael Burden, for a while conducting the investigation without the help of Wexford’s intuitive genius, blunders down a number of blind alleys before uncovering the truth.

Historia
In Colm Tóibín's masterful new novel, we are reunited with Eilis Lacey, the heroine of Brooklyn, twenty years on, in the 1970s, living with her husband, Tony Fiorello, and her children in a house in Long Island, rather too close to her Fiorello in-laws. A shocking piece of news propels Eilis back to Ireland, to a world she thought she had long left behind and to ways of living, and loving, she thought she had lost.

Historia
One by one, she undid each event, each decision, each choice. If Davy had remembered to put on a coat. If Seamie McGeown had not found himself alone on a dark street. If Michael Agnew had not walked through the door of the pub on a quiet night in February in his white shirt. There is nothing special about the day Cushla meets Michael, a married man from Belfast, in the pub owned by her family. But here, love is never far from violence, and this encounter will change both of their lives forever.

Sorry for a sort of non-review, but the narrators voice just kept lulling me to sleep- so I never kept track of the story…

Historia
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

A brilliantly funny and wonderfully observed book!
Revisado: 02-22-23
What a great book! I laughed out loud so many times and what was so interesting was that what was often funny was the absolute truth of the crazy situation we are in! Really brilliant - and fantastically read by the wonderful REG. it is also pretty funny to see all the negative reviews here as they are EXACTLY the type of bigoted people being portrayed in the book! Loved it! He is a wonderful author - both profoundly touching and insightful and also incredibly humorous.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

A lot of rather dull build up that even the unexpected twist at the end doesn’t make up for. Highly overrated. A lazy work.

May have to return this...
Revisado: 06-10-21
I love William Brodricks writing (and as pen name John Fairfax) so I was so excited to start this series having listened to all the Benson /de Vere series ....BUT- The narration of this book, and I see regrettably ALL the Brother Anselm series - is just unbearable. I have really tried, and will try a little longer - but it is SO bad, overacted, dated, and I think may prove impossible to listen to. Please Audible! It is worth getting another reader for this - maybe Daniel Weyman?!

Historia
In the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young cavalry officer is invited to a dance at the home of a rich landowner. There - with a small act of attempted charity - he commits a simple faux pas. But from this seemingly insignificant blunder comes a tale of catastrophe arising from kindness and of honour poisoned by self-regard. Beware of Pity has all the intensity and the formidable sense of torment and of character of the very best of Zweig's work. Definitive translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell.

VERY overrated - not good.
Revisado: 09-10-17
i got this as it had such rave reviews (at the top of the review list...not so, if you scroll further) As the other people who gave 1,2, or 3 stars noted - it is pretty badly written. Begins OK but then is obvious and descends quickly into utter nonsense I admit i finished it because i wanted to be sure who the culprit was - but i resented every 10 minutes more that i listened and was glad when it ended. The writing was about equal to that of a 15 years old - totally silly fight scene with 9 month pregnant woman - and then ridiculous narration by a boy who had been captive since he was 6 using a fully adult vocabulary. In spite of it being a pretty silly book it has left a sort of 'bad taste' ...an unpleasant book.

Historia
For five days in January 1989, the parents of a seven-year-old Tokyo schoolgirl sat and listened to the demands of their daughter's kidnapper. They would never learn his identity. They would never see their daughter again. For the 14 years that followed, the Japanese public listened to the police's apologies. They would never forget the botched investigation that became known as Six Four. They would never forgive the authorities for their failure.

Almost impossible....
Revisado: 02-19-17
Like a previous reviewer, I had so looked forward to this book and had preordered it by a couple of months. However...first of all, the narrator was SO s-l-o-w that it made it practically impossible to listen to. He left huge self-indulgent gaps between sentences, so it was just about acceptable when sped up to 1.25 time, and actually even OK at 1.50.
Also, his characterisations of various characters were impossible to tell one from another.
I have given it four hours of my best attention - a fair trial I think. It may be better to read it - in fact it MUST be as it has such great reviews in book form. Some of the difficulty was certainly mine, in that unfamiliar Japanese names are not so memorable as more familiar European/American names - so it was hard to follow who was who.
But the story was laborious, did not grab me at all - so I am returning it.
I may well see if its different in print - as the narrator is such an integral part of audio books - and this man was pretty horrific.
