Great love story, espionage, and FMC and MMC
Revisado: 05-10-24
I adored this book! Nice job world building, good love story, and Kat is one of the least annoying FMC in a romantasy. Bastian is drool worthy and the spicy scenes are super good. I cannot wait for book 2, and am just sad book 3 isn't out yet!

Very Interesting mythology version
Revisado: 12-22-23
Overall, a good story with interesting character development and plot. I enjoyed the representation of Greek mythology with some new perspective. I found the chronic mispronunciation by the male narrator somewhat distracting because it sounded more like a lower class Dickens character. Occasional mispronunciation by female narrator as well, but less distracting.

The man who became known as Esrahaddon is reported to have destroyed the world’s greatest empire—but there are those who believe he saved it. Few individuals are as divisive, but all agree on three facts: He was exiled to the wilderness, hunted by a goblin priestess, and sentenced to death by a god—all before the age of eight. How he managed to survive and why people continued to fear his name a thousand years later has always been a mystery...until now.

Stop talking, Michael and Robin!!!!
Revisado: 09-23-23
I started with Ryira Revelations and have loved the stories and narration; still do. But the lengthy author’s intro to this series and the “wrap-up by Robin”, his wife, add nothing, and in fact, are so irritating after the masterful voice of Tim Gerard Reynolds, that I find myself doubting I’ll continue. What a shame!
I think people read and listen to books, especially fiction, for pleasure, not to develop a relationship with an author and his/her family members. With written books, at least one may choose whether to read such addenda. In an audio recording, the narration is a huge piece of the experience and to end a story, only to have an unpleasant voice break in and spoil the moment, is at best, a huge distracting let-down. Please stop doing this to otherwise nice books and recordings.

In this episode, I discuss the physiological effects that drinking alcohol has on the brain and body at different levels of consumption and over time. I also describe genetic differences that predispose certain individuals to alcoholism, binge and habit-drinking. I explain alcohol metabolism in simple terms and how it effectively acts as a poison, leading to cellular stress and damage. I then explain that it impacts neuronal function and changes our thinking and behavior – hallmarks of inebriation. I also discuss how alcohol consumption of different amounts impacts inflammation, stress, ...

Wow! What I Didn’t Know Surely Hurt Me
Revisado: 03-08-23
This is the first Huberman Labs podcast I’ve listened to and I’m hooked. As a molecular biologist, I loved all the science-y goodness. More importantly, as a chronic heavy drinker embarked upon a sober curious journey, I’m solidly convinced I need to be alcohol-free even though I’ve had great success cutting back. Thanks for the fantastic information and presentation.

Historia
Joe Simpson, with just his partner, Simon Yates, tackled the unclimbed West Face of the remote 21,000-foot Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in June of 1985. But before they reached the summit, disaster struck. A few days later, Simon staggered into Base Camp, exhausted and frostbitten, to tell their non-climbing companion that Joe was dead. For three days he wrestled with guilt as they prepared to return home. Then a cry in the night took them out with torches, where they found Joe, badly injured.

In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Well done story
Revisado: 11-01-15
I enjoyed the two previous books and like the time travel aspect. Excellent narration. The portraits of the characters in war-time England and London during the blitz are engaging. My favorites are the two children Eileen cares for: the narrator does a fabulous performance of them, in particular. After listening to the earlier books, I was a bit thrown by the lack of communication with/about "present-day" Oxford. But then, that question mark has me eager to go on to the next book!

Just old peasant legends about the gods waking to walk the earth. No modern educated man believes that sort of thing. But they should....

Maybe a Different Narrator?
Revisado: 10-13-15
I'm on the fence about the story; for me, it got lost in the narration. It seems to me that Mr. Rodska used either harsh voices or ones that made the characters sound like simpletons. I found the harsh voices used for the key male characters grating and hard to listen to. The others sounded mostly insipid. I was unable to really invest in the story overall, didn't develop affinity for any of the characters and can't say I'm anxious for the next book in the series. I honestly don't know if that's because the book is mediocre or because the narrator's voice irritated me. Overall: meh.

Excellent Story, Great Characters and narration
Revisado: 06-22-15
Having read this book when it first was published, I knew I was in for a good story and wasn't disappointed. The characters are just as interesting as the first time around and George Guidall is an excellent narrator, with great distinction of characters' voices. I've enjoyed his performance in several other books. Excellent murder/mayhem psychological thriller!

Historia
In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London's seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill - he ripped with a butcher's glee - and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught.

I REALLY wanted to love this book; I really tried.
Revisado: 06-14-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Sadly, I couldn't recommend this book to anyone.
What could Stephen Hunter have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
There was clearly an effort to provide a sensational flair and an elaborate twist to the Ripper story, but sadly, it fell quite short of the mark. I guessed the who the Ripper was the moment he was introduced. I have a high tolerance for grisly violence, but this book was hard for even me to stomach. I disliked it from the start, but doggedly came back to it after finishing several other books along the way, hoping my reaction would be more favorable. It wasn't. The twists meant to startle, stump or stun were weak and unbelievable. I kept falling asleep near the end, having to go back and re-listen; very strange for what should have been the most exciting part!I'm a great fan of the Ripper mystery and follow all renditions, in print, audio or on screen. I'm disappointed that this one was barely "meh".
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Unfortunately, I found the narrator's voice very unpleasant, especially when speaking as the Ripper. It grated on my nerves, another factor causing me to pause and go off to other books multiple times. I think strident, with the sensation of fingernails on the chalkboard, may capture my opinion. Even after I forced myself to tolerate the voice, I found myself losing track of which character was speaking, even though a clear effort went into giving the key characters distinctive voices.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
The book mostly sparked disappointment, with a dash of annoyance and recurring disgust. As noted, the grisly details were just that. Language can be so much more eloquent, even when portraying graphic images. If shock value was the goal, it still fails. The story has so much unfulfilled potential. There was great effort expended in the characters, but I couldn't warm up to any. Really too bad.
Any additional comments?
I will probably avoid both author and narrator in the future.
