Historia
Novelist Aaron Holland Broussard is shattered when his daughter, Fannie Mae, dies suddenly. As he tries to honor her memory by saving two young men from a life of crime amid their opioid-ravaged community, he is drawn into a network of villainy that includes a violent former Klansman, a far-from-holy minister, a biker club posing as evangelicals, and a murderer who has been hiding in plain sight.

Too many “causes”. James Lee Burke is one of my favorite authors but he lost me on this one. Too much time spent talking to deceased daughter.

Story

A little too much of the book was spent on hallucinations. And the constant repetition of the address of MI6 was distracting. However the story was good.

Historia
At age 24 Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal, he had to do something spectacular on the battlefield. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.

Interesting
Revisado: 09-08-23
The Boer war was something I knew little about. Great description of the war and history of South Africa. At times Churchill’s ego and arrogance was a little disconcerting. No fault of the author because that was Churchill. Candice Millard is a wonderful author.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Historia
Back in the days before Vegas was big, when the Mob was at its peak and neon lights were but a glimmer on the horizon, a little Southern town styled itself as a premier destination for the American leisure class. Hot Springs, Arkansas was home to healing waters, Art Deco splendor, and America's original national park - as well as horse racing, nearly a dozen illegal casinos, countless backrooms and brothels, and some of the country’s most bald-faced criminals.

Excellent read. Great characters who were actual people. Great synopsis of the development of LAS Vegas. Whether pro or con gambling the history of Hot Springs is interesting. Begs the question of what Hot Springs could have become.

Revisado: 11-04-22
Have listen to all John Corey books, really enjoyed most of them. This is my last one. If you buy skip the first 2.5 hours. Takes that long for him to get hired as a PI. The whole book could have been no more than 10 hours and would have been better. John Corey has become boring. To much time spent on his smart Alec comments.

Historia
Andrew Gross delivers a stirring story of a Jewish family brought together in the dawn of the women's garment business and torn apart by the birth of organized crime in New York City in the 1930s. Morris, Sol, and Harry Rabishevsky grew up poor and rough in a tiny flat on the Lower East Side, until the death of their father thrust them into having to fend for themselves. Morris, the youngest, dropped out of school at 12 and apprenticed himself to a garment cutter in a clothing factory; Sol headed to accounting school; but Harry, scarred by a family tragedy, fell in with a gang of thugs as a teenager.

Good read
Revisado: 09-27-22
I was reluctant to buy a book that took place in the first of the last century. After a little googling I realized this was really a historical
Fiction novel that contained a lot of historical facts. I think it realistically describes the personality of the major criminals at that time. Morris did border on the verge of Superman but the dialog of his character portrays many of the issues we encounter in life both good and bad.

Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.
