The story is not overly ambitious, and doesn’t sparkle with the brilliance of “The Accidental Tourist” but It feels much more like vintage Tyler than the recent stuff I’ve read. The story is fully satisfying with all of the familiar and artful Anne Tyler touches. Well performed too.

Clever, thoughtful writing but characters are so stupid it gets infuriating

The prose are brilliant and polished. Firth’s performance is brilliant. But these characters and their conception of God or no-God is just so stupid it gets tiresome. The characters deserve the misery they find themselves in.

It’s a little hard to get into, and the story doesn’t really leave the ground until the protagonist leaves home which is more than halfway through the book, but the rewards are huge.
