Well done!
Revisado: 01-13-23
If you liked the first book of this series you will probably love the second.
Characters continue to develop, the story continues to develop, the world building continues to grow. There is another murder mystery to solve, the advancement of camaraderie and team-building, and considerably more magical action. All of this within and around the central theme of SAVE DARLINGTON!
Without spoilers it is safe to say that the story arcs wrap up nicely (no crazy cliffhangers) but it’s clearly moving forward as a longer series.
The narrators do a fabulous job bringing all these characters to life and infusing the voices with enough individuality that you always know whom you are listening to.
A very well done (but not overcooked) second book in this growing series.

Book two of a trilogy each featuring a different couple in the same world aka they all know each other. With a promised HEA its really important to enjoy the ride and the author and narrator totally succeeded in this. Looking forward to book 3.

Strong characters Great narrator
Revisado: 10-17-22
I really enjoyed reading a romance where the characters weren’t two dimensional and overly melodramatic. I liked both leads and understood their POVs enough that I rooted for them early on. The book is well written and brought to life beautifully by the narrators deft performance. Aura really nails the male lead as well as the female and I completely forgot I was listening to a single narrator. Well worth the listen.

Fantastic Narration! Fun storytelling.
Revisado: 11-23-21
The narrator is so great that it elevated the whole story experience. The story is pretty fun, its not the fastest paced and is basically a murder mystery with a green detective (witch) and jaded evasive parter (demon) who never gives her enough to form a clear picture of whats going on. There is some resolution but It ends with cliffhanger finale and Im invested enough in the story that I will read the next installment.

A lovely fairytale/fable telling
Revisado: 10-14-21
Spin the Dawn is a beautifully tailored cocktail of fairytales and fables with a delightful dose of Project Runway blended in.
While there is romance involved our heroine’s primary motivation throughout this book is to protect what is left of her family and to help the peace efforts of her empire after a brutal war took the lives of her older brothers.
Some common YA fantasy tropes were present but none felt forced or obligatory. The mystical elements were fascinating as they are more eastern flavored and I’m more familiar with western fantasy fare. And the primary villains of this story seems to be war, sexism, and classism rather than some nebulous black hat.
Overall I found the journey I joined on this book to be enjoyable.

Pleasantly Surpried
Revisado: 04-04-21
I wont include spoilers because the twists were an important part of my enjoyment of this book (and the series) but I will say that this book is strong addition the the Grishaverse as a whole. I think fans of the series will find it very satisfying.
Im judging this book based on it being categorized as YA. So there are elements geared toward that demographic that may irk me but since Im not the target audience I will give them a pass.
The narrator Lauren Fortgang was, as usual, spot on. She has a wonderful talent for delivering a multitude of distinguished voices with flawless transitions. Im guessing credit also goes to whoever is editing. Well done.

And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

A fun read. No regrets.
Revisado: 03-07-21
Having read ALL of the other Sarah J. Maas books I think I get her style. I have enjoyed each book. And I have a feeling this book was a gift to her fans who were mega "shipping" the dynamic duo that is known as Nessian. Yeah, we wanted it and, oh boy, did she give it to us. Wow. Just wow. In any event, the only reason I gave it 4 stars was that I felt it lacked the epic feel I got with the previous book. It was sizzling hot at many points but the world building and character building kinda fizzled low for me. It was a fun read though. I mean, we knew Nesta was going to eventually figure out what we already knew. What Cassian already knew. So it felt a lot like reading a regular HEA fantasy romance and lacked the epic quality. Her new friends seemed cool but we didn't get enough of them to truly be invested.
The narrator did well with the vast diversity of male/female character voices. I was disappointed though with how often Nesta's voice was identical to her sisters in tone. One of the things I love about Nesta is her blunt, cold, hard, tone. I could have done with a little more of that left in. Overall a fun read and worth the time and credit.

Boring and slooooow...
Revisado: 07-07-20
The writing quality in and of itself was fine. The narrator did what was expected of her well. The story itself was the problem. It never engaged. I never cared about the main character even though I probably should have. Probably because most of the book is her internal dialogue about the same things over and over and over without any other character development and painfully little action.

Disappointing Closer *spoliers*
Revisado: 04-28-20
It promised to be an entertaining series. It started off strong. Many standard fantasy tropes tapped but thats fine if you enjoy the ride. Standard love triangle engaged. Whatever, thats fine if it suits the story and the characters are compelling enough. Things ramp up. Some good action and character building takes place. Then, whoosh. Book 4 ends and it is highly recommended you read a novella that is not available on audio (or easily found elsewhere) because otherwise you wont know what happens in the 25 year gap between book 4&5. What? Really? Oh, but you can read this whole other offshoot series if you want to know more. And, we are told, if you don't read that offshoot series you can still enjoy the following books, but good luck because it will kill a lot of the world building and make you feel like you missed a whole lot of... something.
*spoilers*
Yes, there is a good amount of plot predictably in the final books. And character development vanishes in favor of character reimagining. Which is not altogether bad if not grossly over used here. This whole series ends up feeling like the TV adaptation a strong literary fantasy series instead of the series itself.
There is no happy ending. Nope. We don't get that.
