A book you can read over and over…
Revisado: 06-03-23
…and learn something new each time. This book is vulnerable, honest, and inspiring. My book club voted to read this book and I’d realized I’d already listened to a part of it (right before a move which is why’d I’d forgotten about it). I decided to restart it and I’m glad I did because I needed to recall the beginning of each patients story. You mostly appreciated the variety of patients; that not all of them may be considered likable to the reader upon initially getting to know them. However, their journeys would hopefully uncover empathy and help us understand the complexity of humans. As someone who has gone to therapy, I often felt the exact same way, “Does my therapist like me?” I appreciated the authors vulnerability , sharing not just how she felt as a therapist but receiving therapy. I’ll read this book many more times. It’s just one of those books that teaches you something, either about yourself or other people, each time you read it.

Historia
For three years, Song Yan has filled the emptiness of her Beijing apartment with the tentative notes of her young piano students. She gave up on her own career as a concert pianist many years ago, but her husband Bowen, an executive at a car company, has long rebuffed her pleas to have a child. He resists even when his mother arrives from the southwestern Chinese region of Yunnan and begins her own campaign for a grandchild. As tension in the household rises, it becomes harder for Song Yan to keep her usual placid demeanor.

Difficultly staying focused on this book

I honestly have no idea what really happened in this book. I struggled to pay attention and after awhile gave up on re-reading portions I’d spaced out on. Not a huge fan of this book!

"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me...." Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may be telling you only half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

If you like psychological thrillers…
Revisado: 05-04-23
…this is the book for you! If you don’t then move along! Many reviews described the book as “drawn out” or “long” and “boring”. I enjoyed the way the book was written b/c that time was needed to develop the main character. Because the main character had trauma resulting in possible memory damage this was the most sensible way to get to know her. So maybe for some it’s too slow, but I felt it was just right. Overall a great story and ending.

Overall a good story that kept my attention. I only gave 3 or 4 stars because while it was good, it wasn’t amazing! If you need a book to listen to while you’re unpacking or doing some other monotonous chore this book is just for you! Wasn’t a huge fan of the voice of the reader, however I had no choice to get over it if I wanted to finish the book!

In Homer's account in The Odyssey, Penelope - wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy - is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife, her story a salutary lesson through the ages. Left alone for 20 years when Odysseus goes off to fight in the Trojan war after the abduction of Helen, Penelope manages, in the face of scandalous rumours, to maintain the kingdom of Ithaca.

Personal favorite for years
Revisado: 03-27-23
This is one of the few books I actually re-read. I own it on Kindle, Audible, and always have several hard copies on my bookshelf (extras to give to people who are interested). Initially I reread it as a reminder when I’ve met a person (friend or boyfriend) exhibiting toxic qualities. Each time I read it I take in something new - perhaps I wasn’t ready or able to digest whichever part of the book previously. This book is well written, concise, and easy to understand. Many “self-help” categorized books are not written by professionals and being a professional does not go hand in hand with being a good writer. It’s important to pick wisely with this genre of books but I hope you will consider giving this book a chance.

One of my favorite authors
Revisado: 03-24-23
Ever since I read “Saboteur” in my English literature class about 20 years ago I’ve been a fan of Ha Jin. His short stories are my favorite, especially Bridegroom Stories. Most readers expect a happy ending, but that is not the reality. However, if you really read/listen to the stories there’s an immense amount of hope -either through resilience of his characters or the slightest bit of silver linings. This is what I appreciate the most of Ha Jin’s work.

Historia
Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Thank you, thank you!
Revisado: 03-18-23
It bothers me when people leave reviews starting with “I’m pro-life but open minded to hearing other people’s opinions”. That’s like saying “I’m sorry BUT…” because everything before the “but” doesn’t matter. This is a short story and the author doesn’t have to write toward all perspectives. The point of the short story is to get a small glimpse into what it would feel like for men in a world where the choice over medical decisions related to pregnant are taken away because of Roe v. Wade. Men don’t currently have to get permission from the government for medical choices related to their penis. This is just a small sampling of scenarios, which I thought the author did a great job of emphasizing that are realistic (women not getting job opportunities/promotions b/c they could get pregnant and take maternity leave, teen suicide related to pregnancy, etc.). So before you write a review think about what this short story is really about because one thing is for certain it’s not a place for you to pretend you’re being open minded because you listened to a 38 minute short story that you labeled as pro-choice.
I’m grateful for this short story. It gives the smallest bit of represe to a decision that will have consequences for many generations to come.

We need more books like this
Revisado: 03-18-23
I really enjoyed this book, especially the weaving of modern and traditional Native American culture and rituals. The main characters journey to find her calling was remarkable - many people want a fairy tale ending, but life is full of trials and tribulations and I felt the ending gave the main character peace. The narrator was exceptional which is a blessing because a bad narrator can really make a difference.
While there are challenging themes in this book (drugs, sexual assault) I recommend this book!
