Not my favorite of this series
Revisado: 05-06-25
This book could barely hold my full attention. While overall, I liked the two female leads, and the male lead, there was a lot of whining in this book, and not just from the five-year-old.

Nice distraction, but predictable and nonsensical
Revisado: 03-19-24
audiobook review: the narrator is enjoyable, though there are some limitations to variations in voices for female characters.
I will continue this series to see how it plays out. However, I find myself frequently irritated by some of the details.
Possible Spoilers:
Involvement of main character's sister is predictable. last hour or two of the book is a bit nonsensical, especially where police procedure comes to play. I can’t imagine any of that would fly in real life. given this is a fictional world, I will defer to that as the excuse.

The first time I laid eyes on Henley James, I was mesmerized. The chemistry between us was like nothing I’d ever felt. Impeccable suit, dimpled smile. He was charming and gorgeous, sophisticated and suave. He gave me his business card and asked me to call. His dating game was strong; I was gone from his first smile. I’d love to tell you our date was a raging success, but it wasn’t. Far from it. I decided right there on that day that Henley James and I would forever be mortal enemies; I would never think of him again.

The drama
Revisado: 01-02-24
Audiobook is well done. This one’s a roller coaster. While I like drama in my books, because what else makes a great story?, this one is all over the place to the point of being quite annoying in a lot of places. Points to the narrators! Or should I say minus points? The narration is so well done with expressing the varying emotions of the characters, that it hyped up the annoying factor.

Great for exercising your eye rolling skills
Revisado: 05-06-23
This is my first listen (read) of an L.J. Shen book and I would not pursue reading any others based on this book. I did not read reviews before starting this audiobook. I had to push myself to finish and then read some reviews. Based on them, I may try one more L.J. Shen book before knocking this author off my list. I do not agree with complaints against the narration. The narrator was very good based on my listening to up to 5 audiobooks a week. Reviews are always based on personal preference, though, so everyone's opinion is a valid one. I think a lot of it had to due with the pace of the writing.
The female protagonist was just not very likeable throughout the entire book. I have had characters grow to become favorites, but not in this case. I also do not enjoy books that allude to some horrible event over and over again without explaining it until well into the book. The "twists" were totally predictable and I think I strained my eyes with the number of times I rolled them. Maybe L.J. Shen's genre of writing and style isn't for me, but I'll give it a go with one more book after finding one with reviews that are more favorable than this one.

Half entertaining, half annoying
Revisado: 03-26-23
This authors books are generally enjoyable, and have some funny laugh out loud moments. This story, however, was just plain annoying and not enjoyable in many parts. Adults acting in such an extreme, immature way is not something I want more of. Narration was pretty good overall with the exception of Cooper’s narrator, which became even more difficult to listen to when Cooper’s narrator was narrating Nora.

Interesting story, unlikeable characters
Revisado: 03-21-23
Overall, the story line was interesting. However, I found the female protagonist not very likable, especially in about first half of the book. She is whiny, irrational and immature. While this could somewhat be blamed on her childhood trauma, it made me want to quit listening early.
Narration was OK. Narrator frequently did not transition well into different character’s voices so it became difficult to distinguish between who was speaking.

Could not finish
Revisado: 01-02-23
Audible book performance is great. I made myself get a little over halfway through before stopping. It’s a difficult topic and I just couldn’t get past the female main character. Very depressing book up to that point. Totally understand that it’s trying to get across to how one huge mistake can define the rest of your life and how to you and others continue on beyond it. However, I couldn’t get past the tone of book to make me want to continue.

Interesting premise
Revisado: 12-30-22
Audiobook narration was great. Interesting premise for the story. There were times that I became so irritated with selfishness and poor choices of the main female character that I thought about stopping, but decided to see it through to the end. I will continue the series. One of the most interesting things is that many of the actions that propel the story forward are the thoughts put to action that go through many people’s heads when a loved one takes their life. You may want to skip this book if this subject is too close to home.

I’m wealthy, powerful, and able to get any woman I want. So why do I feel so empty inside? In search of a deeper me, I take a sabbatical from my privileged life. One year of backpacking around Europe: a new identity, no contacts, and no money. Not a bad plan, I think. Until I get there. A crowded hostel room, body odor, and beer bongs—there are no words for the fresh hell I’ve landed in. But amid the chaos, I meet my new roommate, Hayden Whitmore. She sleeps in the bed opposite me, and I openly admit to staring at her more than I sleep.

Erratic mess of a man, but funny
Revisado: 10-04-22
Audiobook review. Great narration. The antics in this book are laugh out loud funny in some places, but the male lead is just so erratic it overpowered the story and knocked off a star the story for me. Also, cussing in books generally doesn’t bother me, seriously, but in this case it was over the top and distracting. Great female lead that put up with way too much.

Audiobook
Revisado: 09-28-22
Attention holding story. Interesting main characters. The following is not in reference to the actual story, but a comment on the narration of the audiobook. While I enjoy good variation in character narration that makes distinguishing between who speaking quite obvious, I could have done without the use of a male and female narrator for this book. The female narrator would have sufficed and did the male character voice just fine. She gets 5 stars. I almost didn’t continue on with the book after it starting off with the male narrator. He sounded like a version of Will Shatner and an episode of Dragnet, distracting from the story. Thankfully, the narration seemed to somewhat improve as the book went on and was broken up by having a female voice.
