Historia
The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common.

Not worth the time
Revisado: 07-05-22
This story is so banal. I had to keep going to see if anything would happen but it was just went on and on. I realize it was a family saga but still. It felt so dated and like a Hallmark movie. I really can’t recommend it.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Terrific writing
Revisado: 10-26-16
I thought that overall the book was very good and held my interest despite being long. The narrator was the best I've ever heard. His reading style and the character voices he enacted made the book better for me. The author is incredibly observant in his writing which is mostly good, but sometimes I felt like he was too much in love with his own writing. It sometimes felt like a solo of one band member when you want to get back to hearing the whole band play together again. The satire was quite brilliant though. I would recommend the book to anyone who appreciates character driven novels overplayed with a historical perspective,

Historia
Littlefield, Massachusetts, named one of the Ten Best Places to Live in America, full of psychologists and college professors, is proud of its fine schools, its girls' soccer teams, its leafy streets, and charming village center. Yet no sooner has sociologist Dr. Clarice Watkins arrived to study the elements of "good quality of life" than someone begins poisoning the town's dogs. Are the poisonings in protest to an off-leash proposal for Baldwin Park - the subject of much town debate - or the sign of a far deeper disorder?

Way too much detail
Revisado: 02-28-16
The author is taken with her own writing and ability to describe things in the most excruciating detail. It's a depressing book that seems to have little point. I would not recommend wasting your time

Historia
Alice Pearse is a mostly happily married mother of three, an attentive daughter, an ambivalent dog owner, a part-time editor, a loyal neighbor, and a Zen commuter. She is not: a cook, a craftswoman, a decorator, an active PTA member, a natural caretaker, or the breadwinner. But when her husband makes a radical career change, Alice is ready to lean in - and she knows exactly how lucky she is to land a job at Scroll, a hip, young startup that promises to be the future of reading.

Characters You Can Relate to
Revisado: 09-28-15
The characters and their dilemma really resonated for me. Nothing was too black and white but rather more nuanced. I truly enjoyed this book.

Historia
Jack Shanley is a well-known New York artist, charming and vain, who doesn’t mean to plunge his family into crisis. His wife, Deb, gladly left behind a difficult career as a dancer to raise the two children she adores. In the ensuing years, she has mostly avoided coming face-to-face with the weaknesses of the man she married. But then an anonymously sent package arrives in the mail: a cardboard box containing sheaves of printed emails chronicling Jack’s secret life. The package is addressed to Deb, but it’s delivered into the wrong hands: her children’s.

Not great
Revisado: 08-14-15
The characters were decently developed and story was going along pretty well when suddenly the narrative switched to tell the future like it was a Christmas card report you might send out. Then it switched back to the story and the characters in real time. I found this future interruption disconcerting and think the book would've been better without it. The beginning was better than the rest of the book. Only fair in my opinion.
