Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Consuming!
Revisado: 06-14-23
What a beautiful book. I’m sorry it ended as I grew to know each character that was given such wonderful depth. I sometimes had a little difficulty with the accent of the narrator (Dr. Verghese) but it didn’t affect how I was intensely drawn into the story.

Historia
When Yang Wei travels to C City for work, he expects nothing more than a standard business trip. A break from his day-to-day routine, a good paycheck, a nice hotel—nothing too extravagant, of course. No fuss, but all the amenities. But this is where his problems begin. A complimentary bottle of mineral water from the hotel minibar results in sudden and debilitating stomach pain, followed by unconsciousness. When he wakes three days later, things don’t improve; they get worse. With no explanation, the hotel forcibly sends him to a hospital for examination.

I quit after just a few chapters. This just isn’t the kind of humor that I enjoy although I’m sure many will think it’s hilarious.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 03-08-23
This is the best book I’ve read in a long time. It’s about a horse but it’s also about the people involved in raising him, fought for him, saw the beauty in him and even those who diagnosed an injury long after he died. This is a history that felt like a detective story. I fell in love with Lexington. I thank Geraldine Brooks for writing such a great book about him and those he touched.

Had to read it again
Revisado: 02-27-23
I read this when it first came out and I recently heard someone mention it. I wanted to read it again to see if I still thought it was great or was it great because I was about the same age as the girl in the family. Well, I flew through this book with barely stopping. It was a horrible story but told so well, with such depth. My conclusion -- yes, it's a great book!

Couldn't keep me tracking
Revisado: 02-27-23
I thought the story would be interesting but it couldn't hold my attention. I just noticed I'm on Chapter 19 and I'm not really sure what's happening because it's not pulling me in -- the narration might be a part of it but I'm not going to waste any more of my time to finish it.

Historia
A young girl aspiring to be a writer recounts her experiences growing up in England during the Second World War. An English schoolgirl has problems, many of them funny, in her attempts to grow up socially. A reissue. Literature of Delight. Headstrong, independent Jessica, at 13, already knows she will be a writer. This early work from a fine British novelist is one of her wittiest. A treasure for sophisticated readers, who won't be shy about seeking out Gardam's adult novels as well, such as Robinson Crusoe's Daughter.

Can't Understand Strong British Accent!
Revisado: 04-12-16
Would you try another book from Jane Gardam and/or Cassandra Wilson?
After being unable to understand this Audible version, I purchased a hard copy of this book and loved it. Yes, I would buy another book if the Audible version was easier to understand.
Would you be willing to try another one of Cassandra Wilson’s performances?
No.
Any additional comments?
I use Audible so that someone can read a book to me while I'm driving or otherwise unable to read a hard copy book. I do NOT want to listen to someone's version of a drama with extreme accents. Please, just a good reader, able to use appropriate voice inflection but no screeching adaption of a book!

Great story -- Terrible narration
Revisado: 04-13-13
What did you like best about Six Years? What did you like least?
I loved the development of this story but considered purchasing a print version because of the overly dramatic, breathy narration. What's with Scott Brick? I don't want to try other books narrated this way and I'm wondering if this was a different style for him or his usual narration.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Over the top drama when the words would have been enough. I started focusing on how weird the narration was instead of the story.
