Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Let down.

Any additional comments?
The main character isn't very likeable, which made it difficult for me to root for her. I'm sure the character is realistic as far as a person struggling with alcohol goes and, in real life, I might have empathy for her, but I prefer strong female characters in books. Some might say her flaws are what make her interesting. Yet, the ending didn't provide a satisfying redemption of her character. I found her neurotic, obsessive, and weak. She works out some of the neurosis and obsessiveness, but not the weakness.
Putting the irritating main character aside, I was disappointed that, despite the red herrings, I figured out "who done it" well before the end. To me, that is a reflection on the writing and not my ability to figure things out. Then, I had to patiently wait for the other characters to work it out.
The real tragedy was the "shocking" ending. I found it trite and silly. I don't want to spoil it, so all I will say is the new secret at the end bothered me. Clearly, I'm in the minority, but I simply wasn't taken with this book at all.

Predictable Fun
Revisado: 03-05-15
Maybe because it's a YA novel, I guessed a few key plot points before they happened. However, the climactic action scenes at the end were completely engaging. I look forward to the rest of the series.
The narrator was good overall, but said some lines a little too whiny for my taste. I still think it's worth a listen.

Stick to the middle three.

What did you love best about METAtropolis?
The three stories in the middle were captivating and well-narrated.
Any additional comments?
It was difficult for me to get into the first story and the last story. My advice is to power through the first one and skip the last story.

Historia
Rising from humble roots as the son of an antique dealer, Wittman built a 20-year career that was nothing short of extraordinary. He went undercover, usually unarmed, to catch art thieves, scammers, and black market traders in Paris and Philadelphia, Rio and Santa Fe, Miami and Madrid. In this compelling memoir, Wittman fascinates with the stories behind his recoveries of priceless art and antiquities.

Bogged down by a bad narration.
Revisado: 10-24-10
I heard an interview with the author on the radio and that's why I decided to download this book. Robert Wittman was an engaging guest with a unique accent, discussing a world most of us are not privy to. I think the format of the book and the stories themselves were interesting and what you would expect after reading the description. However, the narrator gave a bland, monotone reading of the book. His attempts at accents were okay at best. There was little variation in expression, which made it difficult to focus on the story... my mind would wander a bit thinking about art or some tangent and I would have to "rewind" my iPod. I would recommend reading the book instead of listening to this rendition.
