Mr. Ingrassia has managed to write a reader friendly treatise on cancer research that reads like a novel. With a journalist’s talent for getting to the heart of a story in a clear and concise manner, he educates the reader on the process of medical research all the while interspersing the technical issues with the very touching human stories of families, including his own, plagued by recurring cancers. This memoir is truly a masterpiece of research by the author as well as a love letter to his family.

I felt that this story had two levels of intensity—the fairly interesting story of the main character’s dilemma and then the very detailed and erotic love scenes. I realize that this is a romance and that the 2 main characters will end up together, but I think that the love scenes were a bit over the top explicit compared to the light handed treatment received by the rest of the story. The result seemed a bit unbalanced with the main story not quite living up to its potential. I agree with other reviews that the book seemed unfinished with several of the central threads of the story left unresolved at the end.

The premise for this story was interesting and had the potential to be an exciting tale. However, I felt that the author did not do enough to develop the the main characters and their rapport with one another. The first half of the book read like a rough draft of a story with inconsistencies, unrealistic situations, and the lack of insightful details and depth which resulted in a story that seemed uneven and superficial. The last part of the book was better as the pace picked up momentum and an interesting twist was revealed. Where was the editor for this novel?
