Historia
The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s “late plays.” It tells the story of a king whose jealousy results in the banishment of his baby daughter and the death of his beautiful wife. His daughter is found and brought up by a shepherd on the Bohemian coast, but through a series of extraordinary events, father and daughter, and eventually mother too, are reunited.

Interesting story poory narrated
Revisado: 01-07-25
While I appreciated the creative re-telling of The Winter's Tale, the narration spoiled this audiobook for me. I don't understand the decision to alternate narrators by chapter, so the same character is voiced by a male narrator in one chapter and a female narrator in the next. Jarring and annoying, especially because the female narrator was not up to the task of the different accents, regional dialects, and convincing male voices. Very disappointing. I'm going to ask for a refund.

Wonderfully written book but the narrator does a poor job on the accents and character voices. Really spoils the story.

Such a beautiful love story combined an with absurd, hysterically funny series of interruptions and some serious thoughts about responsibility, justice, and the damage done by war. Dorothy Sayers is a brilliant writer who understands the human heart. Loved it!

Historia
After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There—after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes—Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe.

2 stories poorly aligned & terrible narration
Revisado: 05-28-22
Marian's story is interesting though marred by poor narration of men's parts. Contemporary story is boring and forced in its attempt to create a profound connection to Marian. And narration of all contemporary characters is dreadful.

Historia
Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as a protagonist even in his own life: He’s merely Generic Asian man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but he is always relegated to a prop. Yet every day he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant, where Black and White, a procedural cop show, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here, too, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy - the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. At least that’s what he has been told.

Predictable story, infuriating characters
Revisado: 01-23-21
I began this story with high hopes that it would involve interesting character studies and an intriguing mystery to solve. I kept waiting for the story to get interesting but it remained predictable, with the foreshadowing laid on with a trowel. Philip was absolutely insufferable -- would any young adult be so stupid? The only good thing about the story was Jonathan Pryce as narrator - such a beautiful voice, with distinctive voices and accents for each character that were a joy to listen to. If only the story had deserved it. Don't waste a credit!

This is truly one of the most creative, fascinating stories I've ever listened to. And absolutely superb narration. Fiction at its best allows the reader to vicariously live lives far different than our own, try on new perspectives and feelings. This is fiction at its best.

Historia
From the author of The Remains of the Day, here is a novel that is at once a gripping psychological mystery, a wicked satire of the cult of art, and a poignant character study of a man whose public life has accelerated beyond his control. The setting is a nameless Central European city where Ryder, a renowned pianist, has come to give the most important performance of his life. Instead, he finds himself diverted on a series of cryptic and infuriating errands that nevertheless provide him with vital clues to his own past.

Torturous trip to nowhere
Revisado: 06-30-18
This book has been compared to an Escher print, and I couldn't agree more. People and places and events morph without logic, twisting in on themselves in nonsensical ways. The story seems cold and pointless, with every scene a long monologue by one character or another, all of whom seem to be in their own separate, mostly disconnected tracks, wearing down those tracks into deep ruts of stories where phrases repeat over and over. Maybe the characters are supposed to be archetypes or metaphors; they're mostly wooden and one-dimensional. And Ryder, the narrator, is insufferable.
I stayed with this loooong book (and boy did it feel long) until the bitter end, hoping for something interesting or revealing to happen, and though plot points resolved, there was nothing satisfying in those resolutions. It was a stressful, exhausting, and unenjoyable read from beginning to end. Getting my credit back on this one.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Superficial story and terrible narration
Revisado: 06-09-18
I was intrigued by the concept of this book and had heard good reviews, but I'm very disappointed and am giving up on it. Great setting and set-up for the characters but the author skips through so many time periods so quickly that there's little depth to the characters. And there's almost no distinction between characters in the narration -- all offered in a stilted, childish voice. I'm getting my money back on this one.
