Go Beyond the Legend and Enjoy the Real Story
Revisado: 12-02-23
This work is highly detailed, and avoids over dramatising an already dynamic story. The listener does not require a great knowledge of the time period as that the author guides you in such a way that you gain a balance between background and primary subject matter.

Rounds Out the Picture of Two Kings and a Queen
Revisado: 11-03-23
This story, of a lesser known member of the British royal family, round out the picture of the stories of King George V, Queen Mary, and King George VI. Whilst, at times, Mary almost disappears from the picture, due to side stories about other royal figures, this book, nonetheless, paints a fully rounded portrait of a princess. Further, the book gives one and idea of what it is like for someone to grow up in the central portion of a royal family, and then transition to being a peripheral member.

Historia
The highly acclaimed unexpurgated notes taken by James Pope-Hennessy for his official biography of Queen Mary, the present Queen's grandmother. Published in full for the first time and edited by much-admired royal biographer Hugo Vickers. When James Pope-Hennessy began his work on Queen Mary's official biography, it opened the door to meetings with royalty, court members and retainers around Europe. The series of candid observations, secrets and indiscretions contained in his notes were to be kept private for 50 years....

Historia
When Queen Mary died in 1953, James Pope-Hennessy was commissioned to write an official biography of her - unusual for a queen consort. Queen Mary's life, contrary to popular belief, was essentially dramatic, and she played a far more important and influential role in the affairs of the British monarchy than her public image might have otherwise suggested. Using material from the Royal Archives, private papers, and Queen Mary's personal diaries and letters, Pope-Hennessy's biography was a remarkable portrait of a remarkable woman and received rave reviews across the press.

The (Royal) Standard
Revisado: 10-05-23
This is the biography by which all other biographies of royals shall be judged. The research is first rate, and the writing paints a veritable portrait of the fascinating life of HM Queen Mary.
The use of primary source material is first-rate, as is the narrator’s skill at delivering the style of the author.

Historia
The grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, King George V reigned over the British Empire from 1910 to 1936, a period of unprecedented international turbulence. Yet no one could deny that as a young man, George seemed uninspired. As his biographer Harold Nicolson famously put it, "he did nothing at all but kill animals and stick in stamps.” The contrast between him and his flamboyant, hedonistic, playboy father Edward VII could hardly have been greater.

A Surprising Stunner (Much like its subject)
Revisado: 05-02-23
A modern, accessible yet still thorough and well-rounded look at the life of King George V. Due to his nature, and rough early start, it was easy to dismiss him as simple-minded, and ineffective. The author provides a clearer and more well-rounded look at a man who guided a nation through a world war, a depression, and sweep political change, all the while providing a sense of stability and a desire to do the right, not easy, thing.

Historia
Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

Like his life, this book improves, and becomes more interesting, as it progresses. It shines when it spends time on his political and foreign policy work. It leaves you satisfied, yet still open for more information on this complex man.

Historia
In the years before the First World War, the great European powers were ruled by three first cousins: King George V of Britain, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Together, they presided over the last years of dynastic Europe and the outbreak of the most destructive war the world had ever seen, a war that set twentieth-century Europe on course to be the most violent continent in the history of the world.

A Compelling Story that Inspires Further Research
Revisado: 10-22-22
Whilst this is a fascinating story, and one worth knowing, the author does tend to spend too much time on the backstory of the three rulers and not enough time on their direct actions. Perhaps this is an unfair criticism that stems from the title. Perhaps this should have included official recognition of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. Well researched, it is worth a listen.

Historia
In response to an awful camp orientation video created by the god Apollo, Percy Jackson and other residents of Camp Half-Blood answer such questions as "what is this place?" and "do I get to keep the T-shirt?" Newbies can check out the section on the divine cabins, learn about magical landmarks, and consult the chapter on training arenas. But Camp Half-Blood Confidential explores much more than just the buildings and grounds.

A Great Story that Surpasses the Narration
Revisado: 11-22-21
This is a fun mid-point to the overall Percy Jackson saga. It’s also the last of the Percy-dominated books, so it holds a special place in the overall Riordan-verse. It’s got a fun story, fine characters, adventure, and sense of adventure and rises above the sub-standard narration.
Finally, it’s a fun book and doesn’t suffer from Rick Riordan’s current need to be overly politically correct at the expense of the narrative.

Historia
Lila Nash is on the verge of landing her dream job - working as a prosecutor under the Hennepin County Attorney - and has settled into a happy life with her boyfriend, Joe Talbert. But when a woman is pulled from the Mississippi River, barely alive, things in the office take a personal turn. The police believe the woman’s assailant is local photographer Gavin Spenser, but the case quickly flounders as the evidence wears thin. It seems Gavin saw this investigation coming - and no one can imagine how carefully he has prepared.

Eskens Pens Another Winner!
Revisado: 10-03-21
This is another great entry in his Minnesota series!
Whilst we get far too little time with some of his recurring characters, this novel provides the reader another thrilling/intriguing adventure.
The character of Lila gets her “time to shine” in this well-written crime novel. My two critiques of this novel are that her boyfriend Joe is woefully underused (Lila was a strong character in his novels and Eskens could return the favour), and that whilst exploring trauma, Lila spares no time or thought to her challenging adventures facing down a killer in a previous Eskens novel.
